    Amatuer Gunsmithing

    Guys,

I have a small collection of C&R rifles, I'm a volunteer NRA instructor for the Basic Rifle Class and was an assistant scoutmaster for a decade. People know I'm interested in old rifles.

All that puts me in a fair amount of contact with folks. In the past, I've had numerous people bring their old family 22 rifles to me for cleaning, minor repair, or new sights. I do it for cost of materials, to promote shooting sports in the same vein as being an NRA instructor.

So I'm concerned with the new CA long gun registration law. Federal law does not require a transfer to take place when you simply take or send a gun in for repairs. Can anyone speak to this aspect of the new CA law?

I ask this here because it almost always involves a C&R rifle.

    Thanks,
    Crunch

I think it's legal to loan a gun to a non-prohibited person (such as a family member) for a certain period of time...

...unless they changed that recently too.

I don't think it's a problem legally as long as it isn't considered "long term", which is 30 days or less:

But consider these points as well:

      1) How do you know if there person your loaning to is not prohibited? Your still liable even in ignorance. (doesn't apply to OP if he is the one being loaned too).

      2) Repairs on guns carry liability. Most shops and smiths gun some kind of liability business insurance

You may run into some problems if the person does not remain on site while you are doing these repairs.
