    Mosin stock question

Thinking about getting a replacement stock for one of my Mosins - the one it came with was about the most disgusting cosmo-drenched thing you've ever seen. I "baked" it in my home-made solar stock oven for months, and improved it, but it's just ugly and still has a lot of cosmo that will surely weep/give it a greasy feel when the rifle is used.

Looking at buymilsurp.com, I notice their stock listings specify "hex" for some stocks.

My question is this - does it matter if a 91/30 stock was originally (or at re-arsenaling, in most cases) matched with a hex or round receiver? In other words, is there really such a thing as a "hex" stock or a "round" stock?

Yes, I being a bit lazy. I could go disassemble one of each kind and see how they fit with each other. Just thought someone here would know.

Yes it matters. One of them would have to be inletted a bit to fit the other style of receiver. I don't recall which way it goes, either a round receiver will work in a hex stock or a hex receiver will work in a round stock...I think it is the former, but I wouldn't swear to it.

I bought a couple of laminated stocks and tried mounting hex and round receivers in each and found the difference, however, that was a few years ago so I don't recall which way failed.

Thanks, G-Man, have spent lots of time on those sites, just haven't focused on this detail before. May try to confirm the answer there, but logic suggests that "hex" are the stocks that must be matched to the appropriate receiver, as they are the only ones given a special notation on the listings. And Kouye's experience seems consistent with that.

Maybe I'll just disassemble one of each type for inspection/oiling and confirm it.

Inletting is different. A round will go in a Hex, but there's gaps on the inletting, and looks like crap.

IIRC, there is also a difference in the tang. Stepped vs. unstepped.
