    Remington rolling block 1874

I have come across a rolling block Remington for sale - it looks like it's been converted into a cavalry carbine - missing the saddle ring, but the barrel has been shortened as well as the fore stock - likely a very many years ago, as the patina looks as old as the rest of the wood/metal.

It is not one of the big calibers sadly, I am not sure yet, perhaps .43 Spanish or Eqyptian - or perhaps even 7.65 Spanish - too narrow at the breech to be 8mm Lebel or 56.

The finish is great, the Remington patent on the tang is very clear, there is no other marking on it, caliber or otherwise, no Eqyptian markings.

    NRA good - not great.

What is the consensus price-wise on one of these?
    Without a pic - I know it's hard, but a guess-stimate is fine.

I usually steer clear of single shoot, but this is such a balanced, great pointing firearm, and the action is so strong, it appeals - $400 - is the current asking.

I found a few on GB - they were more money ($700 to $1500) - but, also they were bigger and more appealing calibers, .45-70, .50-90 etc.,

    Any help would be appreciated.

7x57 Mauser 1898/1901? south American contract? wood handguard?

I have/shoot two swede 1897's in 8x58RD (brass made from 8x56R Steyr) and a Danish 1892 long rifle (45-70 modified brass) , all shoot well.

Pit, when you say "a Remington Rolling Block", it's like saying "a Winchester Lever Action", there's all kinds! Out of all those, there's 20 times as many calibers, and both those factors determine value. Most any rolling block that functions, is worth $400.
Bannerman made a lot of the Egyptian and Spanish RB's into Carbines too.
Get some pics, and study up here:

Yes, pics, indeed - sadly it is not always polite to photograph these things - or, I should rephrase and say it does't work in my favor, negotiating -

          Trap,

That is the perfect reference site - yes -
I could't find anything on my searches - and a half a library on German WW2 weapons didn't help, lol.
I have the Flaydermans' blue book but that wasn't much aid.

6mmnt - my instinct was that it was 7x57 - curiously enough - I will take a spare round with me next time.

          Thank you, gents -

Good luck pit! I still regret passing up on a 7mm rolling block that came into the shop a while back.

I have a thing for carbines - find them handy.

G33, T53, No 5, this is a few decades older, but definitely the same sort of "handy'ness" -

Reading about the falling block, one can't help but impressed by it's simplicity and strength as a platform - interesting.

I passed on a clean 7mm. The stock resembled that of a minty '03. Had a US marked barrel band. Not a lot of other markings. Included was a very nice cloth sling that looked military. Still kick myself.
