    Muzzleloader Ammo Question

So I bought a modern Muzzleloader and I totally love the thing. It is nice to have something my friends dont have. At any rate I have been shooting the .45 cal saboted bullets by Hornaday because they are cheaper then the .50 cal Powerbelt bullets. I was wondering if I could use other .45cal bullets like the 45 cal (.458) monoflex or 45cal (.452) bushmaster. I figure as long as it fits in a sabot and down the barrel of the rifle I am good, RIGHT???

when you order sabots, they usually state what size projectile will fit the sabot, you should be good to go with .452, but can't say that with the .458 as I've never tried any in that size. if you do try to seat one of those, I'd recommend swabbing the barrel with a lubed patch before trying to ram it down on the powder.

Why not try a .490 round ball with a lubed patch?
      Way cheaper.

        Ditto!
If you need help with any stragglers, call a friend, because it's likely that they have a gun. America in particular have done exceptionally well taking care of the problem, as there are 1.12 guns for every 1 American citizen. So throw a rock, you'll probably hit a gun, pick up that gun, then shoot a zombie.

Thanks for the info guys. I have read about using a round patched ball BUT when I went to go by them at a muzzleloading shop the owner told me it would not work with a modern muzzleloader. He said the twist were to quick and they would just tear up the patch and ball or worse!!!! I have read that this was possible if I load a lesser charge, right now I am shooting with 100 grain black powder and saboted bullets. What would I need to reduce my load to if I were to use the patch and ball. Have you guys done this?

If it's a "modern muzzleloader" it probably has a twist rate that is too fast for patched round balls to preform well. But, I'd still try them since, I prefer shooting RBs than conicals. Hell, I took my first buck with a patched roundball back in '87.
