Krag arrived from CMP... WOW! - with pics -

I sent away for a Krag the day after Orest made the announcement that they had some for mail order sales. So being the good CMP junkie I ordered a "X" grade, attached with a nice handwritten note on how I would love a complete rifle and I have been waiting for a CMP Krag for a long time.

Well, today the Big White Truck arrives with a long box!!!

Here are the specifics of my prize:
My Krag rifle was made in 1902 and is sporting the original stock. All parts are intact including the firing pin, the barrel looks shiny and shows strong rifling - it gages 0.5 at the muzzle on my 1903 .30 gage. The barrel measures in correct at 30 inches and the total length is 4'1" so it has not been cut down at all.

It has 1901 sights and a 1901 handguard

The original finish looks great there is no rust just some wear and light scuffs on the bluing... I really cannot believe I only paid $450 for this rifle it has to be worth at least $1000!!!!

I couldn't be happier! I have been waiting for a Krag from the CMP for five years and getting this rifle today made the wait worth while.

I heart the CMP!!!

Very nice and very lucky. I've read on the CSP forum that some folks examined Krags at the CMP store and the bores were all badly pitted.

I know Krags well. You got a steal! Worth way much more. Still has lots of orignal bluing & nice stock, rifling looks good at the crown, easily $1200 to $1400 . but hang onto it. The price you paid is worth keeping it.

No worries, I am keeping it to pass to my son. I just ordered up a bayonet that is dated 1902 so it will be matching.

I still cannot believe how nice the barrel is, the MW @ .5 is unheard of. My test fired only collector grade Garand has that tight of a muzzle.

Thanks for in input... so from what I have been reading since it has the 1901 sights it did not go through the 1905 rebuild program - were the 1902 rifles crated up somewhere as war reserves while they rebuilt the 1889-1901 rifles? I have also ordered the "The American Krag Rifle and Carbine" book, so I hope to learn more.

Since the receiver is blued, it was through a rebuild at one time or other --looks good though -- good buy --

toolman9000, very nice, I like Krags and they are great shooters. You will enjoy it. What is the condition of the bore, chamber and is the firing pin still there or was it ground or broken off? BTW, here is the link to the Krag Collectors Assoc. Lots of good info with a great forum. Also, the CSP Krag site is good.

What is the condition of the bore, chamber and is the firing pin still there or was it ground or broken off?

The chamber is in the white and looks great, the rifling throughout is strong and bright - no frosting or pitting what so ever. The barrel looks better then both my 1903 and 03-A3. The firing pin is intact and not ground off or broken, that is the first thing I checked when it arrived.

I almost feels like I am on candid camera waiting for Allen Funt to pop out with the "real" junk Krag that I was going to get.

So with the chamber in the white, did it really go through a rebuild program or just get a new barrel? What finish was on the receiver when new?

I have one, I think it is a NRA carbine, I need to research it more. I am far from a Krag expert. I picked it up for $40 OTD this year(long story).

I have not picked up ammo yet, I have seen it at the retail level and at a gunshop or two/. Winchester makes it still I think. It runs usually over $25 a box of 20.

Right now it is last on my list to shoot (got a few guns in the "to shoot" pile right now), I mainly got it to fill out my US Arms collection... but some day I will pull the trigger a few times.
