I was at WEGC today and a young guy was shooting a Mauser. i was talking to him and he said he paid 100 bucks for it with 300 rounds of ammo .
It was no beauty queen with a cracked hand guard. it was a 24-47 yugo .
it was dated 1924. If i had 150 bucks on me i am sure he would have sold it to me on the spot. it fired properly and was hitting the 100 yard gong no problem.

I find that sometimes if a guy is selling a gun here in Norcal and you have to travel a little you can get a pretty decent deal.

I try to keep money in my pocket so when I find a good deal I can grab it.

I make the rounds of gun dealers about once a week and keep an eye on back page. Deals come along but you have to be ready.

It always behooves one to befriend older gentlemen. Not only do they have great stories and all the best jokes, but often they have cool old guns that they "just dont shoot anymore".

I have always gotten along better with old timers anyway, but it has led to a couple of good deals for me. Right now I have a line on an authentic WWII M1 carbine that an older gentleman I know wants to sell me. I am hoping to get a good deal while also offering him a fair price.

Yards sales, estate sales and putting the word out there.
Get there early, the guns are gone in the first 30 minutes usually - (by 8:30am)
WTB ads and combing through classifieds.

You have to work though - there are a lot of other folks out there hunting.
Carry your FFL and COE in the car.

+1...learned that tip from my dad. He always had a 2-3 hundred in cash on him for just such an event. I've adjusted for inflation and have scored some sweet deals when a guy needs the $$ more that the gun.

It's tough to have enough cash around for all the good deals that come around sometimes!!!

My favorite Mauser deal was done with another Calgunner. I bought a really nice (mint-ish) M24/47. It came with an extra in the white replacement barrel and IIRC about 1,200 rounds of Yugo surplus ammo on strippers in boxes. He didn't give it away but it was dirt cheap considering the condition of the rifle and a ton of quality ammo

I was a range last year shooting my Polish M44. During one of the breaks, I guy was admiring it. The break was over and I kept shooting, as I was packing up, the same guy came up to me and said "If you want to sell it, I'll give you $300 for it" I thought about it for a second and politely told him "no thanks - I'm keeping it" First only time that has happened

does a chinese SKS with 800 rounds of norinco dated 1993 for 375 count as a good deal ?. except for a replacement stock the #s match. that was one of my best deals i did jump on.

One of my favorite deals was for this 1888 Springfield trapdoor. All original (including sling), perfect bore, US marked tool in the buttstock. Just had it out recently, shoots like a dream.

The guy needed $100 for a water pump on his car. I think I did OK.
