    Arisaka advice?

    Hi Guys,

I am looking at trading a pistol for an Arisaka Type 99 Short rifle this week. Rifle appears to be matching numbers, has the dust cover, and intact mum. Can anyone give me advice as to what to inspect on these rifles and tips as to where I can find ammo? It is a Tokyo Kogyo arsenal 32nd series.

Shame on you Armistice! . Last Ditch Arisakas ARE safe to shoot! The legend surrounding this topic came about largely from post war US servicemen attempting to fire live ammo in Arisaka Training Rifles. They were so marked, but in Japanese. The legend came about from the somewhat predictable results...

Nice looking rifle, 7.7 Japanese ammo seems hard to find since Hornady recalled a bunch last year. I've seen some Norma with soft point bullets during several searches. Ain't cheap but you can reload after you get the brass. I got to shoot my 6.5 Type 44 Carbine and a 7.7 Arisaka rifle before I sold them last year, they'd been safe queens for a few years. Actually both were very pleasant to shoot and accurate. Trading a CZ 50 for a good Arisaka is a good/great deal, congrats. Bore should be good as they were chrome lined. Good score on the dust cover and matching numbers they were frequently discarded because of the noise I'm told.

Nice rifle, I would definitely make the trade if it has those features you mentioned. How does the bore look? Don't freak out if you can't see the rifling that well; the Arisakas used chrome lined polygonal rifling in their barrels.

Handloading is your best bet for this round as it is very expensive and hard to find. The good thing is that it shares the same bullet diameter for reloading as the Mosin Nagants (7.62x54R) and Enfields (.303 British).

Bore is beautiful. Just took a look at it again today. Going through with the trade when the FFL opens up for business. All the screws are still staked.

Are you sure it is a Tokyo Kogyo? That would mean it was a Tokyo Juki Kogyo, which is somewhat rare. More likely a Toyo Kogyo? That would make more sense with a 32nd series. If you could post a pic of the ID marks I can quickly look it up in the book.

                  Toyo Kogyo 32nd series had:

                  - Two screw front band
                  - 4 7/8" cleaning rod
                  - Non-monopod rear band
                  - Rear ladder sight without anti aircraft
                  - Dust cover eliminated

If your dust cover does not have a matching number on the rear lip, it might not be original to the gun. Check all the numbers on the bolt assembly for matching too.

If you could put up a pic of the stock at the area directly behind the grip (behind the tirgger) there should be two marks there that we can check to see if the stock is original to the gun.

I get all my ammo from Mr. Nambu auctions on gunbroker. Real 7.7 brass.

My apologies for mistyping. You are correct it is Toyo Kogyo. Bolt was matching, I will have to look at the dust cover closer to see where the number is. There are some marks behind the mentioned trigger screws but it is hard to make out what they were.

So nice... I'd love to own an Arisaka some day. I suppose it's sort of necessary of me to own one since I'm half Jap myself. Whatever reason to buy more C&R's, right? :P

The stock looks right for a Toyo, they had a deep reddish color, much more red than any other arsenal. Very nice rifle and I would put it's value, even without an original dust cover, to be a lot. Toyo is a somewhat more rare arsenal and is highly desirable.

That's a nice specimen there. I'd put a value way north of 5 bills..
