    Model of 1917 question?

I just picked up this 1917 from Gunbroker. It is a Century import that probably came from England or Canada (either Century or the previous owner removed the red stripe). It is Winchester mix master but the parts are Winchester. The bore is in great shape and it still has the original blue.

I'm happy with the rifle but have a couple of questions:

I think the front sight is a replacement:

What do these numbers stand for:

Most likely a rack number. Nice rifle. Mine went to Canada and bubba's refined cousin removed the red stripe as well. Kind of bummed on that.

OP can you post a pic of your floor plate. I'm doing a 1917 project it has an enfied floor plate and does not match the 1917 Winchester stock very well.

The front sight was originally a blade type and is interchangeable with a P14 foresight blade. There are 11 heights varying by 0.015 inch increments from 0.985 to 1.135.

The Model of 1917 did not have any markings on the stock except for the proofs so yours must be a rack number or something along that line like Father Ted suggested.

Thanks Enfield47. Numrich has the blades for about 5 bucks but it doesn't specify heights. I'll just order one and see what I get.

I do recall that the Empire did send some to Greece for their civil war in the late 40's. I had a Canadian that seems to have had went there.

Not all the Commonwealth issue rifles were the red-stripe rifles.

The Canadians will have a big "C" with a broadhead within it as a wood cartouche. Check the butt and under the wrist.

Well what do you know, there it is. So I guess my rifle didn't go across the pond.

I spoke too soon; all the external parts are Winchester but the floor plate is Eddystone. Mine fits OK I can post a picture if you still want it.

The Danes used a front post sight like that on their M1917s.

If it went to Canada it had red stripes. Mine still has it on the flats of hand guard and stock where it seeped in when they painted it. Mine also came with that round post style sight blade. I replaced it with a Stsndsrd blade and put that one in one of my nick back boxes. They are great rifles, I don't shoot mine nearly enough.

Thanks Trickster. So my rifle went to Canada and then was sent to Denmark, I've found a lot information on line about Danish m1917s. I already have a standard blade coming in, I'll be doing the same thing as Father Ted.

When you order the front sight blade, get the tallest one available. Battle rifles tend to shoot high (a battlefield zero) so the tallest one you can get just might get your rifle shooting closer to a 100 yard point of aim.
