Winchester 43 Deluxe in 218 Bee

This thread should be titled "The Dangers of Having a C & R/COE" .....

I visited Krausewerks this weekend and on the wall was a Winchester 43 Deluxe in 218 Bee. In excellent shape with a Paul Jaeger side mount & rings attached. No scope. I've always wanted a 43, just got a great deal on a steel tubed Weaver K12 so, out comes the plastic and I left with it directly.

The rifle is in 218 Bee. I already reload and given how difficult it is to find 218 Bee brass will be resizing 25.20 and 32.20 brass instead. I assume this is pretty straightforward, size the 32.20 to 25, size the the 25 down to 22 then fireform. Am I missing anything on that end? Any suggestions regarding bullet and powder?

I bought the gun because it's in great shape and assumed the Jaeger mount, while period correct, was aftermarket and killed collector value. The rifle has an "A" suffix serial number and I've read that was used to indicate a production change at the factory, such as drilling & tapping for a scope. I find it difficult to believe Winchester would D & T for something as unusual as a Jaeger side mount. Does anyone know if Winchester would have done this as a special order item?

Finally, the rings are 26 mm - just a bit too big for the standard 1" scope, probably for an old Kollmorgan scope. Does anyone have a source for 1" Jaeger rings other than EBay?

It's always interesting buying a nice old gun.

      Must have pics!
Doug, I may have a solution to your problem, with a excellent condition Kollmorgan scope. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

Yeah, you are missinng something. Given that 25-20 brass is hard to find and guys like me are searching for it everywhere, we want to know - why are you are wantonly ruining our brass?

Seriously, though - nice acquisition and have fun with the rifle. I hear 218 Bee is a fun one to shoot.

You'll have to trim and ream the necks. Here's the easy way.

The .218 Bee is blast to shoot! You'll enjoy it.

Are you using it for varmint shooting, or just at the range?

43 Owners, Bert Hartman is doing a survey on these rifles for an upcoming article. If you have one, please get the info on yours to him at
Win1885@msn.com and be sure to put "Winchester" in the subject line!

              From Bert on dfletcher's 43
"I am not 100% sure at this time (I am still researching the Model 43 for an upcoming article), but I believe it has to do with the operation of the bolt cocking mechanism. The "A" was added to the serial number sometime between serial numbers 16705 - 16928.

Your Model 43 was manufactured on 2/23/1950.

For those that are interested, I am currently conducting a research survey for the Model 43. The Cody Firearms Museum (CFM) records office has the original Winchester serialization records (Polishing Room) for all 62,617 Model 43 rifles that were manufactured. I can access that information for anyone wanting an exact date of manufacture."

Well, I do have a Marlin in 25.20 - so I'm not buying up more brass, just "reconfiguring" what I'd buy anyway. OK, maybe I am buying up a bit more brass. Finding 25.20 brass was a bit of a challenge, but finding 32.20 was pretty easy. Midsouth has 100 count bags, Midway 50 count. So I'm using mostly that and sizing down.

Just at the range. Most of the guys I shoot with do the "tactical" stuff. I'll bet the Jaeger side mount beats them all for ease and return to point of aim.

Thank you for the info. I posted a different question on GB, I know Bert posts there often. Haven't met him yet so far as a I know, I know he's gone to the Reno show on occasion. I'm amazed by what he knows about Winchesters and he's always helping folks.

I used to have the Browning model 65 in .218 Bee. Great jack rabbit gun! I think I still have some brass rolling around in storage, for the day I find a model 43 in .218 Bee. One of my favorite vintage varmint guns is a Savage 23 in .25-20. I'm always looking for old boxes of Hornady 60 gr. bullets to make vintage varmint loads.

Hornady still makes the 60 grain FP. I bought a few boxes last year when they were in stock, haven't seen them much since.

There is/was some 218 brass listed on castboolits --

My w43 218b # 19567A is a "standard" i guess -- came with a weaver g-4 and a lyman 57 receiver sight. The original barrel mount leaf had been removed.
I got it about 1960 so you really don't want to know how much it cost :-)
                              I have used it mostly with cast 225415, 225462, and 225450 --
