    03 FFL Application Sent

I finally got my application completed and submitted. The biggest problem was submitting the CLEO copy. My city contracts police service form the County Sheriff's Office. We have a police station here in town, so I went there first. They sent me to the SO Investigative Division. After a little run around, I got the form delivered and dropped the ATF copy in the mail.

I can't wait for the license to get here so I can start buying cool old Milsurp rifles and get some discounts from the various 03 friendly vendors!

I want to thank the guys that post in this section. I never would have done this without reading the various posts outlining the advantages of having an 03 FFL.

    Thanks fellas!!!

glad to see that you got it figured out on the CLEO side.

Next time, I'd just list either the Sheriff or the Caption of the contracted sub-station as the CLEO and just drop it in the mail. On the CLEO copy, drop that in the mail addressed to the CLEO with a letter explaining what it was. You don't need to personally deliver it. No further involvement of the CLEO is needed.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

I sent mine to the big cheese thats always on TV. It took a while to figure it out, but thats what the local BATF lady told me to do....I've heard some tips here you should send it to who ever would come to your door when you dial 911, but in many areas(I'm assuming) it gets more complicated than that with county lines, etc.

What complicated the deal for me was that we have a Chief of Police here in town, although she is a member of the Sheriff's Office. I put her name on the form, but had to deliver the form to to SO's center of operations.

No matter now, it's just a matter of (the BATF's) time.

I just mailed mine to the county sheriff. I don't know if he got it, and I don't care. I got my license in the mail.

I took mine to San Jose pd main office and was told we don't accept those. Then we had a little "discussion" about R.K.B.A. so after running around and having to go there again. I got mine too.

Now comes the big wait...11 weeks and counting here.

Best advice is to just forget about it like I did and hope that some day maybe this year it will show up. I could build a house faster.

11 weeks! WOW! I got mine in 4 weeks. I sent an email on evening, and the next morning, there was a response that it was due to be mailed the next day. The lady was nice, she even offered to fax me a copy!

can't remember off hand, but it was on the BATF website, the regional office site or something like that. I wound up talking to a lady in Atlanta. I think it was an address for general questions for the FFL03 people.....I just included all my info......

thats why you just address it to the CLEO and drop it in the mail. If they don't know what to do with it, its not your problem. They aren't even required to keep it, they can round-file it on the spot if they want.

All that matters is that you list the CLEO on the ATF copy and then send a copy to the CLEO.

Getting FFL and keeping it - two different things?

The topic brought up a question. I too thought very seriously about getting my FFL (and of course the other CA licenses you need as well (City Business lic., Franchise tax board resellers lic. etc.), But the forms (as well as the ATF agent who actually called me back) said that you must make buying and selling weapons on "ongoing business". They said specifically that they look for folks who get the FFL and then buying nothing but cherries for their own collections. So a question to those who have them - have you ever been audited and the ATF sees only purchases into your private collection? If so - don't they just suspend the license?

Well, we are talking about an 03 C&R FFL for curios and relics. It is an FFL for collectors and it is designed to improve a personal collection. It is not for business purposes. It is for 50+ year old firearms and listed curios & relics.

Now, if you are talking about an 01 FFL, those are for business use, and if you don't show business use, then yes, they can cancel your FFl.
