    K98 bayonet question.

I was telling one of my co-workers that I had just purchased a K98. He then told me that he had a bayonet which he thought was German that his grandfather brought back from the ETO after WWII. I told him that I would give him $120 for if it was in good condition. He brought it in today and it the bayonet matches the scabbard but the frog was cut at the upper rivets and the stitching undone on the section between the rivets. This wasn't a deal breaker until I took out the bayonet, it has been sharpened and a lot. He told me he remembers his grandfather in the garage sharpening all his knives on a grinder. Now I know this isn't worth $120 but I'm still interested because of the history; how much should I offer him?

You summed it up very well. The sharpening essentially removed any real collector value. $40-$50 would be fair, and only if you like your co-worker and want to help him out with some cash.

I paid 50 bucks for a very pitted Polish re issue Mauser bayonet. I was told it was a battle field pick up when the Germans invaded Poland. I bought it for the POSSIBLE history. It has been heavily cleaned up. looks nice on my 1918 danzig KAR98a.
