M1 Rifle extractor

A first for me after shooting M1s since 1972: a round pulled the extractor out of the bolt while shooting today. I found it sitting on the shooting bench next to me all in one piece. I had this happen once before but with an M14 firing blanks. In that instances the fired round pulled the extractor out of the bolt but unfortunately for me the guts fell out of the bolt too. This time everything stayed in place more or less. I was shooting PS 80 .30 ball which I have used without issues before. Perhaps one rim was deformed enough to hook onto the extractor and yank it out.

I'll put it back together and see if it stays that way.

You will have to replace the extractor detent spring and ball end, maybe extractor.

But try cleaning the spring hole in bolt (Q-Tips) and extractor spring/ball real good with q tips and lightly oil, typically the spring collapses and get too weak to stay put anymore.

also with the new extractor.. check to make sure the extractor post doesn't protrude out the bottom of the bolt.. that is one the reasons the extractor takes off along with a weak extractor retainer spring
