SKS Variants, UPDATED Post #28 with "Ghost Gun"

But I got a little closer this week anyway...

I'd always wanted a "French Tickler" Chicom and I found one NIB on GB. Rifle is brand spanking new but has a few marks in the stock from over the years. Definitely a late model Chicom.. Pinned barrel and appears to be a sheet metal trigger group. I have not seen one of those before.

Other than some marks on the stock everything is mint. K-Sports Box, sling. manual, oil bottle, and surplus Chinese ammo carrier. Very cool bundle. I cleaned it all up and there was still faint cosmo. The French Tickler handguard is neat too, never had one of those either. Here are a few pics:

    This looks stamped to me:

This space reserved for pics of the Classic hand select, all matching ghost gun SKS that showed up today. 5 digit serial, no other markings. YES!

      Psh, "Made in China"

Nice finds. You never cease to amaze me with what you find

I, too, was on GB bidding today, but alas it went out of my price range. I have a feeling that "just one more bid" would've won it for me

Yes, I have been smacked down in GB lots. I thought I had a perfect 51 Tula Ex-DDR in the bag at about $500 and it went nutty in the last hour and got to about $800 or so. I haven't been able to touch an Izhevsk or a '49 either.

You're the reason I've started the process for my COE and browsing GB. My wallet will soon hate you, haha

          Any updates on the SKS's?

I was of the opinion that the Paratrooper was a mismatched ex-bubba'd bastard, but I was told on SKS Boards that a cut down pot bellied and unnumbered stock is correct on a Paratrooper, as it was modded to fit the gun when cut down. Apparently mismatched parts are common on Para's too.

The only other update is that the Ghost gun I got from Classic looks to be quite a good score. All matching down to the stock, with a plain 5 number serial. No other markings at all. One very slight spot of light pitting under the wood line and otherwise in nearly perfect condition. It is still in the clean up stage but it was well worth the upcharge for matching and condition.

With the luck and persistence that you have, I'm sure you'll find East German SKS.
                    Nice sks by the way.

Nice Chinese SKS rifles! Is the Paratrooper still 30" OAL with the 16" barrel? I suppose if it isn't you can just have the bayonet extended if a LEO takes issue with it.

I have had a few SKS rifles in the past, but never paid much attention to the different variants. I bought a couple of Russians last week at a gun show and didn't realize that one of them was an Izhevsk until I got it home. Even then I didn't find out that they were uncommon until my son pointed out that they were basically a one year only production rifle. The seller didn't know either because he went for the offer I made him.

How many different types do you reckon there are?

That is a nice pickup for you. Izhevsk Russian SKS are uncommon and fetch higher prices than Tulas. There are many sub-variants but other than your unicorn types, the five basic food groups are Russian, Chinese, Yugos, Romanians, and Albanians.

The paratrooper is legal OAL with or without the bayonet, thankfully.

                              Hey Bobbie nice rifle!!

It does have a screwed in barrel.

It's the "short collar" type found on Chinese riles before the switch to pinned barrels. Both of my rifles with the "french tickler" hand guard also have the short barrel collars....

                              See the comparison below.
