K98K BNZ 4 value? Updated, I bought it (pics in post #9).

I'm looking at buying my first true German Mauser. I want a shooter so don't really care about any ss markings, nazi chickens etc. I found a BNZ 4 code mixmaster that's in good shape with a good bore. It's finish is pretty worn so I don't think it's a RC. What would be a decent price for this rifle? I checked gunbroker already and they only have all matching number specimens at this moment. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

If you aren't concerned with Waffenamts you can buy a nice scrubbed Yugo K98 aka M98 for $300 or so. They usually have nice barrels and wood too. I have a few of them.

Someone at K98 forums has a crate of ten he is selling at $279 a piece in the trader section.

Yugo captures - no eagles, with Yugo crest - They are German K98's not M48s.
They look nice - I was thinking of buying the crate - but, I would end up living in it, if I bought it - Mrs. Pitfighter is just about done.

I personally steer clear of BNZ mausers. These are the Steyr produced guns (in Austria) that had several undesirable issues. Firstly, this factory used slave labor, very early on. Secondly, they operated mainly as a barrel and stock manufacturer, and most parts where made at the captured Radom (Poland) plant. This was the Polish coversion of the Danzig (German) plant, which was closed after WW1.

Thirdly, they where earmarked by the SS as a vendor that they could manipulate because the regular manufacturers where all spoken for and under the control of several different parts of the Wehrmacht.

So the guns are essentially poorly made (if yours is a 4 that means 1944) and was very rough in almost all ways. The machining quality was atrocious. Add to that the inferior Polish parts coming in.

My advice is to find a nice RC with a true BYF, Gustloff, Borigswald, or JP Sauer code and avoid 660's and BNZ's completely.

Personally, I think BNZ rifles are pretty cool.
I'll second this^^^^^ and all the BNZ's I own have been very accurate and their finish matched my BYF, Banner, and S/42 Mausers. I love my reworked Yugos too...

I have a BNZ 4 that I dearly love. Very accurate and well made. It is a semi kriegsmodel.

Anything after 43 is too rough for me:

Well, I bought it. I paid $450 locally so I guess it wasn't a deal but didn't get ripped off. The stock and receiver are the only matching parts. Almost all of the bluing is gone and it is not import marked. The stock is in great shape, it's a red glue laminated stock with very few dings. The magazine floor plate is stamped and it has what looks like a new production sight hood. It's missing the capture screws (already ordered) and I'm going to look for a sight hood that matches the look of the rest of the rifle. The bore has strong rifling but needs a good cleaning. Would this rifle be a full Kreigsmodell or a semi? Here are some pictures and thanks for helping out a K98 newb.

I feel like you definitely over paid, but as long as you like it. Is that rust on the barrel?

I don't think it's rust. All the finish is gone, it's more of a dark brown without the flash.

Gotcha, well enjoy it in good health. You have any ammo for it? I ended up buying some corrosive stuff from Graf's as it was the only decently priced stuff I could find.

The price is on the upper range considering condition but I think still reasonable. The good thing is that sooner or later market price will move up to your cost, and with prices lately i doubt youll wait long. In the meantime you'll have a fun shooter.

I created an account on that site and posted a couple things to get access to the trader section. I didn't see any Yugo K98's for sale and most of the stuff was old. Was I looking in the wrong place?

You never pay too much for a gun. Sometimes we might buy one a little early, but soon enough it can be sold for more than you paid.

                              Bobby -

I am on too many forums, it was not on the K98 forum, it was on the 1919 forum -

                              Here it is - http://1919a4.com/showthread.php?490...an-K98k-rifles

I am sorry you joined the wrong forum, there is some good info over there, although the members are a little short on humor.
The 1919 forums are great if you have a 1919 or almost any belt fed semi - parts and accessories, their bolt action classifieds has to be one of the least visited on the interweb though, which is why these are still there, I guess.

                              That's all I have -
