    Arisaka Type 99 Range Report

I found an all original Type 99 22nd series Kokura (made 1939/1940ish) with an original numbered dust cover, monopod, aircraft sights, and all matching everything else. The stock is dinged but has most of the Urushi left and is quite beautiful. Been looking for years for an all original and intact rifle. The bore is immaculate.

With some Mr. Nambu 150 grain soft points I was able to get around 3" groups all night at 100 yards. One group really was amazing toward the end! What an amazing design this rifle was, there are some situations where I would take it over a mauser. I had no real appreciation for the Japanese stuff until I shot it. Quality, fit and finish, and unique design features. Recoil feels like that of a .303, very comfortable to shoot, even for a taller shooter.

Best sights ever, the triangle post and aperture is my new favorite.

But it's nice to see someone shoot an Arisaka. That's like the one rifle that no one ever shoots. I think I've only seen them in person like three times in my life.

Funny you should say that, because the only other time in 20 years of shooting I saw one at the range was at Coyote Point recently, maybe 2 months ago. Guy had a type 99 long rifle, very rare.

The setup at Coyote is silly, I agree. Shooting out of a mail slot at a poorly lit target, lol. Hurts my back. Those ports are also a C&R nightmare because they are metal, so your always worried about a bad scratch or ding.....

That is a very nice looking Arisaka!

I've got several Type 99 Arisaka's, including the early long rifle (31" barrel) and one with WWII bring-back papers, plus a couple of the Type 38's.

I recently sold my Type 44 with the folding bayonet. I never shot the thing.

I've found the Arisakas to be well made and accurate.

I've heard some complain that the aperture sight on the Type99 is "too large", but for me at least, I think it's just right.
I hauled a T38 to Coyote Point once. Didn't really care for the range, although, I guess the location makes it convenient for some. I'd rather go west, up to the Los Altos range.

way prettier than both my 99s but they are one of my favorite shooters. I whip up a pretty nasty 7.7 load too! mine don't recoil like a .303 though, I can tell you that. either way, I have 2 99s and a 38 carbine and I really enjoy the hell out of shooting them. that's a beauty you have there, keep it forever, you won't regret it.

Nice 99 there OP. Care to share what you paid? Very scarce with all the goodies intact.

I have 0 problems shooting any of my Mosins with regard to recoil at all.

However, shooting out of those slots made it really uncomfortable; once I shot this dude's PU replica build and given the tall scope mount and the lack of space down the mail slot, that really sucked.

I thought the ROs at that range were kind of corny sometimes, but I did meet some nice people there who let me shoot their stuff.

Do you have more pics of your Arisaka?
