Why does everyone say that the carbine has so much more recoil when I can shoot a carbine length mosin for most of the day but only punished when I switch to a 91(/30)?

I'm I crazy? The mosin carbines are louder, but that's it.
So by that logic, a snubnose .38 should have less kick than the same round fired through a 6" barreled revolver.

^ *laughs* my thoughts exactly reading through this thread.

I feel harsher recoil from my M38 than my 91/30...

My 5lb 12ga 18" SxS has both beat though... good god, slugs in that gun. Havent done that in awhile.

Like many others in this thread, I can not feel a difference between my T53s and 91/30s.

Maybe it is mental but if i shoot my M-44 without a butt pad after a couple of shots it hurts. i can shoot my 91-30 without a pad without it hurting.

Shooting from a table I can feel the extra recoil from the M44 vs 91/30. But standing and shooting both I feel no difference.

Don't forget that there can be dramatic differences in felt recoil depending on the rounds used.

If I shoot my m44 a certain way with the metal butt plate it hurts really bad but if I hold it just right it does not hurt at all.

I agree with CAguy, when I removed the bayo it felt so much better and lighter for carrying it out in the fields but I can always re-attach it for "historical accuracy" but I read somewhere that if Finns captured them they would remove the bayonet too.

Worrying about recoil of a Mosin is like worrying about MPG with a muscle car. The enjoyment of the fireball out of my '38 over takes any notice of that little kick.

The Finns really took the Mosins to a whole new level. For them, accuracy was important, for Russians it was about the quantity they could produce.

Back on topic, the longer 91/30 is heavier so it's probably not sitting against your shoulder like the shorter and lighter carbine does which makes it feel like it's pounding your shoulder harder.

No idea how accurate this table is (and it doesn't compare Mosins against themselves), but it's an interesting comparison between different calibers, and the different weights of the rifles in some cases.

It has been said a few time, but people are apparently not reading it.

The 91/30 does not weigh more than an M44. The bayonet adds a huge amount of weight to the M44. Published numbers are M44 = 9 lbs. 91/30 is 8.8 pounds.

And there was a study done a few years back where someone measured the recoil and it was verified that the 91/30 had more transmitted force into the shooter than the M44.

I do have to say I always felt like the 91/30 was an easier push than the M44. But it must be psychological.

Regarding the snubnose comment. A long barrel revolver actually does have more mass to it than a snub. Unlike the Mosins being discussed.

You all are doing it all wrong. Place the butt of the stock on your forehead.
Which ever is the second to be fired is the one that recoils the hardest, lol.

All you younguns, I am only kidding, please don't do it.

without a doubt my 91/30 is more pleasant to shoot than my m44. Even if the m44 didn't have the stickiest bolt ever. I let new shooters shoot the rifle all the time, and almost never bring out the carbine.
