Spanish Civil War Mauser

Just picked this up recently. I believe it is a Wz.29. Has some parts with German stampings though.

Anyway this one has a sanizited receiver and so it probably went to Spanish Republican Army during their Civil War. Bore is fantastic. Mostly matching. Also has one of the smoothest bolts of any Mauser I have come across.

Very nice Kar 98AZ-like gun, I do like those Kar 98AZs with those prominent stacking hooks and the full-length stock up to the pretty much tip of the barrel.

That is a Kar98AZ-style rifle. Small ring Mauser. I thought the WZ-29 was a large ring?

So the Polish Karabiner 98AZ and the Wz.29 are different short rifles?

I believe the Polish 98AZs were built upon machine tooling from the Prussian arsenal at Danzig, which was "repatriated" by the Poles as part of war reparations after WW1, so they just continued to make 98AZ patterned guns until they eventually settled on the Wz.29, which is more of a large-ring type Mauser.

But why would a Polish-manufactured gun be marked K98? Or are you saying this was made up by the Poles on a German-manufactured receiver made in Danzig previous to the Polish takeover? Possible--just about anything is possible in the wonderful world of the wars-between-the-wars, especially in milsurps!

Are any of the proofs Polish? Not a rhetorical question; I'm completely ignorant of Polish guns except for the Radom-VIS, and most of those I've handled had German proofs, not Polish.

The only proof marks I have found so far are pictured.

Let us know what you find--I for one am a sucker for anything from the Spanish Civil War, but so far have only one Star and one Astra with verified provenance from that truly nasty conflict.

Can't say for sure, but I do know a lot of of weapons-making machine tools in Danzig, including the barrel manufacturer Bismarckhutte was shipped off to Radom, where the new Polish state established a national armory.
