A Question for Muzzleloader Experts

Ballistol is what I use. I have a small spray bottle in the range bag/ possibles bag, diluted with water 25% ballistol /75% water. Also a small container of 100% Ballistol .I have patches pre-cut and spritzed in a small film can. In the event the muzzle loading (Remington) 6 shooter needs a mid session clean/lube I use the spray bottle and piece of old t-shirt. The muzzle loading rifle has never needed a mid session clean since I started using Ballistol patches. Oh, and I only use Goex or some other real BP. Before leaving the line I take the spray bottle and shoot some mix down the barrel (just a little) to loosen fouling. Get home and run one 100 % ballistol patch into barrel and cylinders rinse a few times with hot water, patch til happy. Ballistol is you friend. I use it for everything gun related, great stuff. Midway has it for 17 bucks retail, or 12 on sale, my $.02

Bore Butter for long term and post cleaning protection. Or use your tallow/BW mix you may use for patches as protection as well. I avoid at all costs, petroleum based products. Using the TALLOW based products will keep evaporation of oils from occurring, BW will leave a removable polishable surface as well. Simply put, a barrier will be left, if used heavy enough, that will not ruin clothes but will resist with great force, all moisture.

If you have ever oiled a modern rifle, then stored it, then took it out to show someone, then found rust a few months later.........

Then

use Bore Butter or tallow based products )add or use anhydrous lanolin based homebrew. You can handle the gun, will have soft hands after, will resist salt of your hands and a ladies high PH too.

I believe that is the CRUX of the question. Use of BORE BUTTER as a post cleaning preservative agent on metal work.

BTW: Neither of the products presented will wick into the wood and cause swelling at metal/wood fitments. OIL DOES!! OIL ruins stocks at end grain.

I've tried a lot of lubes and cleaners over the past 20 some years. I use Hoppe's 9+ for a patch lube. It cleans the bore every time you load a patched ball. For a good cleaning after a shoot I spray Simple Green down the barrel, and run patches until clean and dry-usually 3 or 4 patches. Then I wipe the bore with Burchwood Casey Barricade which prevents any rusting.
