The new spring would not fit all the way into the channel when put on the pin. The pin itself went in fine and reverted back to free float with no spring. With some determined probing with a nail I found the original spring. It was crushed o half its size and still right there in the channel. Not visible to the naked eye, but could feel the ridges when a tiny nail was stuck in there.

As you know I am also one of those SKS rifle nuts as well. I have no experience with Murray's springs so I can't make judgement on them. What I do not understand is that you mentioned "everyone likes Murray's stuff" yet you also mentioned that "the new spring would not fit all the way into the channel when put on the spring". Just my opinion but, to me me it sounds like Murray's is kind of a hit and miss for his quality.

I have not had any issues with slam fire in my SKS rifles. Never have had rapid fire issues. But, if it works for you and others and you are happy with the springs, all the better then.

I suspect you missed the bit about the reason the new firing pin and spring would not seat properly.

The new spring was actually fine and was the correct size and length. The only reason it didn't fit in there is because the old spring was crushed down in the recess out of view and created a blockage.

I suppose I shouldn't say "everyone" likes their stuff. But across the web the comments are mostly positive. Just upgrading for the sake of upgrading is one thing, but I had to buy a new firing pin because the round of Tula that pierced the primer bent the factory spring.

I haven't had a slam fire either thankfully, but Murray's actually reshapes the bolt face, removes burrs, and sends you back a bolt that is much improved. The dozen or more SKS's sitting next to this one are all still factory original because there has never been any need to change anything.

It took me a while to get over the FUD out there that Chinese SKS rifles are somehow more cheaply made or lower quality than other variants. The problem with this rifle was all ammo related. The weapon itself is great. Poyer and Kehaya actually remark in their book that the QC on Chinese SKS was excellent across the board, in both military and commercially marketed variants.

P.S. I noticed after the fact that the pics of the rifle are a little washed out and look sort of like raw and unfinished wood. I don't know why exactly, because there is a whole can of Formby's low gloss Tung oil rubbed into it and it is definitely protected and has a nice smooth feel to it.

And anyway, I've seen Jarhead's lovely refinished SKS rifles and he has forgotten more about stock refinishing than I could ever hope to learn!
