    LC ammo corrosive?

In my continuing search for ammo to replace all the KA ammo I ran through my Garand, I came across a fellow Calgunner selling some CMP ammunition in 20 round boxes. The boxes state that they are packaged by Talon.

The ammo inside is headstamped LC69 I think. Is this safe to shoot? I am pretty sure it is lake city and to my knowledge pretty good.

Thanks in advance. I decided to give all my KA ammo to my friend for his bolt action gun and am trying to replace it all.

I assume you are reffering to M2 ball? If so, I've never seen LC-89. Are you sure it's not LC-69? If it is the they are not corrosive as LC changed to non corrosive primer in the early 50s.

Smart man getting rid of that POS KA. KA and PS are junk.

It's probably LC69 then and I misread it.

The PS is corrosive too? I thought it was safe to shoot.

Dratz! That means I have to go back through it and pull the PS out... So pretty much all LC5_ and forward will be safe?

Any GI (American) '06 made after 1954 is non-corrosive. .30 M1 (carbine) is all non-corrosive. Corrosive shoots as good as anything, just clean the rifle well afterwards. Heck, we won a World War or two with corrosive ammo.

Thanks for the information. I think I'm gonna go ahead and pick up the ammo. The lake city I've used before has been pretty good ammunition.

CAUTION - we provided M1 Carbines to France. There is French-made 30 Carbine ammo out there that IS corrosive. The short-stroke piston operating system in the Carbine was deemed so difficult to disassemble and clean, that the US procurement requirements were always for non-corrosive primers. That French stuff will destroy your gas piston.

Yes, we won 2 wars with corrosive ammo for the Garand. HOWEVER, John Garand and the US ordnance folks did not have us collectors 70 years later in mind when they designed the rifle and its maintenance procedures.

Lake city is good and most I have encountered is nonmagnetic as well. Get it and forget about the Korean.

The L.C. ammo from Talon Mfg was made from demilled or delinked 06 round about 2002-2004.I picked a case while at Camp Perry in 2004.Itwas packaged in a wire bound crate with four 30cal cans inside, somewhere in the garage it still sits.

Talon was closed due to...err.... issues

Some of the Talon ammo shows no signs of being demilled...

No collet marks of any type on the bullets

I shot a bunch of the 30-06 ammo years ago... I could keep around 1 1/2 MOA at 200 with a bolt gun and 4x scope...

I am mindful that the ammo might be original and I would suggest waiting the full 60 seconds if you have a hangfire / bad primer.

Interesting that some people think that the Talon ammo has some collector value,it was packaged in brown boxes with CMP logo.

I've never shot that French Carbine ammo, but I've seen what it does. I'd put it right up there on top of the list with KA, and battery acid.

Red China made a large quantity of .30 carbine marked LC 52; it is corrosive and berdan primed. I still find fired cases of this stuff at the range so it is floating around. Be warned.

Frankford Arsenal produced a run of match .30 and 7.62 in 1956 that uses corrosive primers. Look for headstamps of FA 56. Also FA .30 match:

                            " EXCEPTIONS FOR FRANKFORD ARSENAL:
1.Any .30-’06 Ball with zinc plated primers with headstamp of FA 47 or later is non-corrosive.
2.FA .30-’06 "Special Match" headstamped FA 53, FA 54, or FA 56 with red, purple or green
                            primer waterproofing is CORROSIVE"

The Talon stuff is good to go, save the brass for reloading. I bought some 8-10 years ago and it was not de-milled like it was supposed to have been. Maybe someone got mixed up and thought they were only supposed to be de-linked.

yeah, I almost broke my de-capping pin on that stupid LC-52 marked Chinese Crap, punched right threw the web and made a third hole.
