A replacement set for the 50 year old springs is probably a good idea, buy if it works? ...you don't need to fix it.

It depends on how well used it is. I got some WWII rack grades that needed new springs, the H&R's have been in pretty good shape and almost new, so I haven't had to replace any parts on them, yet.

The CMP is supposed to do a function test, I guess in order for a rifle to function, some parts replacement may be required.

One of mine was covered in very old Cosmoline. Doesn't hurt to have a spring kit on hand, springs wear out. Just make sure to get correct spec op rod spring like orion7 sells.

If it is in working order and within specs then don't sweat it. However, I know of people that received CMP rifles with the spring broken in several pieces. So it is prudent to have a spare spring. Get the best spring made, stainless steel from Orion 7.

I have bought more than a dozen service grade and correct grade rifles from them. None of them needed anything other than cleaning up. All have functioned perfectly.

Never hurts to have a spare spring, just in case. Garand Gear also sells a high quality spring just like Orion 7, and its nice to support a local business.

First thing anyone should do with a Garand is do a complete tear down clean and properly grease the rifle, and replace the Op Rod spring with one from Orion 7
Rilfes will function with springs broken in several pieces, What you need to remember is the spring also helps to cushion the bolt from slamming into the receiver heel when fired.
I have seen receiver heels crack under normal firing(using in spec M2Ball ammo) Who knows how much stress /fatigue has already been put on these old warhorses
A new Op Rod spring is very cheap insurance, replace it

I agree with other post - once you get it, take it apart/clean it and inspect it.
If you don't know go on Youtube - I'm sure there's plenty of vid's on how to do it.
I'm assuming you ordered from ammo CMP as well??

My feeling is that since you've got it ripped down anyway, and you should have a set of springs handy in case of trouble anyway, you may as well install the suckers. New ones last a long time, they may as well be in the gun.

The exception would be if you were lucky enough to get multiple Garands, then you could get fewer spring packs and apply as necessary. But if you can afford multiple Garands... the springs are just not that expensive.

CMP used to replace the op rod spring before shipping, but not sure they still do. Pull the old one out and let it hang vertically, is it looks like a snake or u can see wear high points ditch the spring, the Orion 7 ones are guaranteed for ever and are the best $8 or so you will spend on the gun.
