Question for mosin guys

Hey guys went out this weekend shooting with a buddy and he brought 2 mosin nagants. A 9130 and a m44, I had always thought of these and surplus junk.....Oh boy was I wrong Lord I apologize.
We shot a full 440 can of ammo between these 2 and we were smacking a gong at 300 yard constantly.
Anyway I got the fever now and I have to start collecting them. I want to start with a 91/30 and a m44.
My problem is I'm not sure what the true worth is of these 2, I look at the marketplace here and see them going upwards of 400 bucks but I see them online at places like j&g for around 2 for the 44 and 135 for the 9130.
So my question is this;
Is the marketplace here on the high side or is that normal prices for California,

Any tips would be appreciated.

Nearly all Mosins are refurbs, something like 98%, so if collecting is not the goal then condition is king, namely the condition of the bore. You can buy B grade cheap mosins from Classic for $100. Expect to spend hours getting the cosmoline out, personally I would pay more for an example that was already cleaned.

M44's just got in to Classic (and maybe other places) for around $200. They don't shoot nearly as well as the rifle length.

Gun shows are also great to take a good look and hand select. Usually most gun shops have a few, and Big 5 sometimes has some coupons and deals.

A Hex receiver is better than a round one, but expect to pay more. You can bypass the Russian stuff altogether and go for a Finish Mosin, which is the same thing just better made in almost all ways. Expect to pay more.

the market place here is on the normal high California side, lol. I'd just order one from one of the online guys or go out to JG and pick one up. While I suppose it's just good old capitalism, lots of guys are cranking up prices on them here because cash&carry died and they think nobody will go to the trouble of getting one elsewhere. watch big5 or turners for 91/30s. small local shops may occasionally have an m44, m38, or 91/59 carbine if you're lucky, otherwise order one for under 300 online, don't fall for the gouging.

Do you have an 03FFL and a COE?
Probably not since you weren't already into surplus.
Correct me if I'm wrong but without an 03FFL you can't just go to J&G or Classic and order something.
It has to be shipped to a local gun store where you pay the transfer fee on top of the price of the firearm, up to $75 in some places.
You should probably stick with what is available at a gun show, a local gun store, or the marketplace.
Unless your friend wants to sell you one.
Check local gun stores, even pawn shops have deals from time to time.

lots of mosins here on marketplace, I bought my last one, Tula, from a calgunner, the other one, the hex, I bought at Big five, even though it cost more then usual but you can pick and choose if you run into a nice salesman

my advice, from one mosin noob to another mosin noob;
get a cheap one (Big 5 or Turners) for under 200...go have a blast with it and dont forget to clean it every time you shoot corrosive ammo through it.

i got mine a few years back for 150...private party sale. but i still see them at Turners for 150-200 every now and then

I just bough a 1934 hex at my local Big 5 about a month ago for $180 plus taxes and fees. So far I have shot only 40 rounds of expensive winchester and ppu ammo threw it at 100 yards but it is dead on accurate. I didn't care for them until I shot my friends hex mosin and I knew I had to get one.

Call me crazy but i like my 91/30 better than my expensive ar15 got mine at big five a while back for 100 bucks but now their around 180 otd. Try big5 then get your 03 if u want more and like the prices for em online.

Definitely go to Big 5. I paid 180 otd including a lock just before New Years. Wait for a sale though. They come along fairly often so you won't wait long. Get a coupon for them of the internet.

I shoot a 1926 Finnish Mosin M28/30 in our monthly military bolt silhouette match at Pala. I tell everyone that if I ever get into a real shootout, this is the rifle I will be pulling out of the safe. The thing is just flat out accurate, and I'm doing it with cast bullets. Mine is a non-refurb original match rifle with a true .308 bore, and I paid accordingly for it. If you really want to wring out your old bolt rifle, show up at Pala the first Saturday of every month and shoot silhouette with us. Nothing like dropping a 500 yard ram with a rifle that may be older than your grandfather...

Look at the calguns market place, meet the person so you can inspect the rifle and bring a small flashlight (so you can look down the bore). Don't be afraid to work the action and such, you not going to hurt it. If ivan couldn't hurt it - nothing you do (short of anything really stupid) is going to damage the rifle. Of course Big 5 isn't a bad idea either, I bought my 1st C&R gun from there a few years ago. I would def start would a 91-30 and once you do (or maybe even before) go to youtube and check out some video's; just be careful some of those guys are just posers.
