    Arisaka Owners: Question about bore

I recently acquired a Arisaka Type 99 and was wondering if it's normal for the rifling in the bore to be dull? The bore is in good condition with no pitting but it's hard to define the land and grooves. It this because of the chrome lining?

Not all type 99s had chrome bores. Substitute or "last ditch" rifles generally don't have chrome bores.

I have an earlier one with a chrome bore and the lands are very crisp, so I don't think chrome is the issue.

may just be dark which will make it harder to see, but most likely fine. they were pretty robust rifles and it's rare to see one shot out. type 38s maybe, but 99s were only made about 6 years or so. best way to find out is to go shoot it and see if you can hit anything. that'll tell you if the bore is any good or not. I've had things with ugly bores shoot fine and vice-versa so don't let it get you down.

It has nothing to do with being chrome lined

Arisakas have a Metford type of polygonal rifling. They do not have the sharp and deep lands/grooves of traditional rifling. They can appear worn to the uninitiated.

Thanks! That makes perfect sense now. I never knew that older rifles like the Type 99 had polygonal rifling.

It's not true polygonal but its similar, my 22nd series has the same lack of definition or crispness between lands and grooves.

Vlad, is there a link on Calguns that teaches about rifling, etc? I don't know how to compare one rifle to another. Land, grooves, frosting & coounter boring are mysteries to me. I can understand pitting, but say I am at Big 5 looking at Hex Mosins...how do I know I have good rifling or not?....and say I order a C&R rifle and get it dropped at my door....what am I looking for as far as good rifling? Can some of you guys post some pics and some advice? I do appreciate your knowledge. Thanks

The best bore images by far that I've seen are from 'CH' on guboards. http://forums.gunboards.com/showthre...ecting-Rifling
