Can somebody please tell me more about my Persian Mauser carbine

    Hi all,
I purchased this rifle from a coworker last year simply because I have never seen one before. It is in pretty rough shape. Looks like it has been drug behind a camel from Tehran to Baghdad and back. My Farsi is a little rusty , but i can tell the serial numbers don't match and there are no import marks. The woman I purchased it from told me that it belonged to her uncle who was a conscript in the East German Army and he used it as he escaped to the West sometime in the 1950s. This is one rifle that I wish could talk.
My apologies for the picture quality. Thanks in advance.

It looks like an Iranian made M49. It is probably 8mm Mauser caliber.

These were made in Iran and I'm not sure how it would have made its way to East Germany.

It's a M-49...Imported before 1968.. They are nice little carbines.. They do "roar" when fired due to the short barrel. Interesting story as to the rifles history....Your M-49's was made in Persia (Iran) in contrast to the Persian M-98/29's which were mainly made in Brno CZ.

See the rifle described as a Persian Mauser 98 carbine in the add below.

Here is a table for converting Farsi (Persian) into English numbers.

The cutout in the stock was for a sling "buckle" as in the pic below.

Wow, thanks for all the info SVT. Seeing that ad makes me wish I could time travel with a fist full of cash! I don't think i did too bad picking it up for $250. It really does roar and it kicks like a mule.
I'm no sharpshooter but it does consistently hit steel plates out to 300 yards. I really would love to take it on a night shoot with my M38 and No. 5 mk1 to compare the muzzle flash, in the name of science, of course. It has to put out quite a fireball!
Im not sure how it made its way to East Germany, but that is the story I was told by her. It is second hand info though.
Thanks again for the help everyone.

Gotta love those vintage advertisements. Its so fun to sell the variety of available surplus small arms. Being in the firearm import business in the years after WWII would have been a hell of a time, and a damn profitable one too...
