    Blackpowder Question: Ramrod

I was thinking about getting another ramrod for my tradtions .50 muzzle loader pistol, I don't really want to use the one that came with pistol.

I didn't really see anyone that sells bp pistol ramrods - unless I'm not looking in the right places.

Also could I just a wooden dowel with a brass cap on it?

They exist. They're basically like a short starter with a long leg.

You can also make one youself. Get a hardwood dowel at the hardware store, make sore the grain is straight. Put any kind of top on it-I like to use the round wooden balls from the craft section at Wally World.

Make a range rod out of aluminum, never use a wood rod if your going to shoot it.

I saw one of their aluminum rod extensions and it seemed well-made.
You probably would need an extension piece and a handle or their 3-piece rod.

I would agree that using wood in a long gun isn't a good idea-they are liable to break. But for pistols I prefer wood. There is less or no damage to the barrel crown as can be caused by metal.

I'm with Old Scribe. Wood works really well in pistols, especially with a .50 you're looking at a thick short piece of wood. It's sturdy and you don't have to worry about scraping anything. I have a .36 pistol and for that I use basically the same design with a thin metal rod.

Either buy one of the ones I linked to or rip off the design and make your own (using the comments about grain Old Scribe said in the earlier post).

                  I would just buy this...

I understand wanting a wood ramrod. But personally I think that's just for decoration/display.

Um, bellts? Read the thread again. That's a 32" ramrod and he has a single shot pistol with maybe a 9" barrel or something like that. He's really better off with a pistol rod. If you click the links I posted they're just a short starter that's longer than normal, and like all short starters they're made of wood and not especially decorative. We are NOT recommending a wooden rifle/musket rod and the standard advice for those does not apply here.

This is a ball starter, not a pistol ramrod. It will not push a PRB down far enough for most BP pistols.
