    headspace and Mosins

OK, so big brown dropped off a big box from SOG today. 5 91/30s inside.

These are my first milsurps, and I'm trying to learn as much as possible. I think I can sort out the cosmoline, as these don't seem NEARLY as bad as some horror stories I've heard.

But I know NOTHING about headspace. And I have no gauges.
So I've been trying to read up. I'm learning, I guess, but I still can't gauge it.
Does anybody in the South Bay (SJ?) have at least a no-go, and care to loan it?

Take a fired case, or better yet an unfired new case, make a shim from a business card .008 put shim between case and bolt - if bolt doen't close good - If it does add a paper shim .003 to the card - if it closes headspace is probably too big -- This is for rough checking only -- get or make gage for precise measurement.

99.9% of Mosins have zero headspace issues. They're not Mausers or Enfields. Relax.

That's kinda what I've been hearing. Thanks for the input.

And thanks for the tip, Gunboat.
