Squirrel huntin' with a Mosin!

Yes guy is lucky to still be on top of the world, instead of the world being on top of him.
And wouldn't a squirrel shot with a mosin round basically explode?Sorry, not sorry.
🎺

Dear autocorrect, I'm really getting tired of your shirt!Comment

Interesting. For all the fail, the reporting seems to very high-quality for a small-town paper.
So he is definitely screwed then.It is illegal to hunt on Sunday in Maine.
I know this has been covered in other threads, but what are the ballistics on the 7.62x54R. If you fire your Mosin at a 45 degree angle, the bullet is going to land a couple miles away, right?
It sounds like the guy was hit by a tumbling round in free-fall. This is generally not as deadly as commonly believed.Comment

I think I just figured out what happened here. This is not a Type 53, but instead it's a Russian M44. As Bobby points out in the other thread, you never see Type 53s in this nice condition. Furthermore, I would bet anything that this was a recent purchase from the last batch of M44s that came through a couple months ago. Here are the two M44s I bought from J&G as Black Friday purchases. Compare these to the OP photo.
So this dumbass decided he would go try his new rifle out and use animals for target practice and got a Darwin award for his trouble. Mystery solved.Comment

Hey look! Another one of these stories:
Crowder denies motion to dismiss defendant in errant bullet suit; Plaintiff claims he was shot in face by Mosin Nagant rifle from a mile away
In other Mosin news:
Upcoming DayZ patch adds even more inventive ways to open cans
Century breathes life into aging Mosins with archangel system
The T-53s that Century chose for these upgrades had badly damaged stocks and worn out finish. Since these rifles would have been difficult to sell at a profit, Century decided to get them back into fighting shape with help from the Archangel system.Comment

Its a T53. The serial line right above the receiver gives it away. That's where the Izhevsk crest would be (not a tula either). Lowwall. Plus the reporter isnt going to pull Chinese made out of a hat, they saw the Chinese characters and the CAI billboard that says China. There are actually nice looking T53s out there
The 7.62x54 can go a good 5000 yds. There's a whole lot of 'know whats behind your target' when your shooting into a tree with a Mosin. Unbelievably stupid.
And being Maine the guys wasn't charged, No Way that happens in CA

Yeah; I think you pegged it. Anything less and the guy would be dead.I know this has been covered in other threads, but what are the ballistics on the 7.62x54R. If you fire your Mosin at a 45 degree angle, the bullet is going to land a couple miles away, right?
It sounds like the guy was hit by a tumbling round in free-fall. This is generally not as deadly as commonly believed.
On the plus side; at least this would mean it really was an accident and the 'hunter' was not so careless as to shoot at something with a person directly behind it.Comment

Shooting a squirrel with a T-53 Mosin - Didn't someone tell that fool Mosin's ARE NOT that accuarate! If the squirrel was a a big as a side of a barn you may have a chance!"The only thing necessary for the triumph [of evil] is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke speech of 23 April 1770, "Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents," delivered to the House of Commons.Comment

Squirrel with a Mosin? Just use blanks. Get within 25 yards, and the muzzle blast will stun him. Then club him with the buttstock (prior to reloading the rifle).
Shoot up into a tree with a 30 caliber rifle. What a moron.

Not true. I can blast potatoes out to 100 yards with my scope on the first and only hit. Just depends on how well you work at being accurate with it.
