    1851 Navy on sale

Cabela's has the 1851 Confederate Navy pistol on sale for $149 thru 5 Feb.

I got one for the looks, maybe I'll do BP now.

So I'm guessing more folks will begin to venture into bp pistols and rifles.. Major appeal seems imo to be that they won't be registered... Also the the novelty and classic style is very cool in itself.. Has anyone here shot one of these ? Only main thing I have heard of is that brass frames are not as solid as the steel framed ones... Brass framed ones have a tendency to warp more due to hi heat vs steel ones, or so i have heard.. love to get one of these, but will it stand up to, say semi regular shooting ( once or twice month ) with out any frame issues? Input is greatly appreciated...

At 3:30 in the morning with insomnia, I was very well behaved!

              I'm surprised I didn't flame you, really.

Its true a link would have helped, but I got excited about the price and the gun!

I read some of the reviews, seems if you use 18 gains by volume of pwder you will have a good, durable shooter. Mine will probably be a bookend or something, it might get shot once or twice.

Meh. It is the brass frame version. They have a long history of stretching and loosening up over time. I'll pass. Besides, I like the Remington revolvers from that timeframe. They have a solid top strap that keeps them together better. I would go with the steel frame if you want a Colt clone. It will last you longer.

All Cablas Reno has had in stock since the "sale" at Christmas are the 1851 Navys, no Walkers or M 1858s.
Unless that has changed in the past week.

I'm hoping to get a M1858 Sherfiffs model if and when they really go on sale again.

I have the 1851 and have put roughly 300 rounds through it w/o any "stretching" or loosening up. I also shoot the 1858 with a steel frame. True the brass is not as sturdy as the steel framed wheel guns, but they were put to more use during the Civil War than any of us will ever use one.
I don't think you could reload fast enough to cause a heating problem for the brass frame. If you like the looks of it shoot it.

That's a brass frame, keep the loads mild and it will last forever but shoot it like a steel frame and it will make a nice book end,
BTW the real 1851 were never .44 cal, they were .36. Just Pietta's way of selling more guns.

+1 for Tom-ADC, During the Civil war the guns designated as Navy were .36 cal and the ones designated as Army were .44 cal. They all were primarily used by the Army and very few of either went to the Navy. It was one of Sam'l Colt's marketing methods, Just like changing the address on some of his guns to Hartford CT instead of NY,NY, "Great Marketing"
