Finally got a mosin!

A few days ago I bought a hex 1936 Mosin Nagant from Big 5. The bore looked good and the wood is in pretty good condition. It also came with the goody bag. I paid $180 for the rifle plus taxes and fees how did I do? Also the rifle still has some of the greasy stuff on it.The sales person at big 5 said they cleaned off a lot of it but there is still some left. How do I remove it? Also I read 1936 was the last year that they made hex models does that add value to the rifle?

nice to get a HEX receiver as your first Mosin. it will need a lot of cleaning so take your time and do it right. taking the bolt apart and cleaning it is very important. be sure to get in their around the chamber and clean it good also. it can be fun to do .

Yeah I always thought that they were lame until I shot my friends hex and I knew I had to get one. I can't wait to shoot it, now I just need to find some non magnetic ammo for under $1 a round.

Mineral spirits is your friend when it comes to cosmoline clean-up. Soak all the metal parts and go after them with a tooth or acid brush. Enjoy!

Wrapping the wood in paper towels, then sticking it in black trash bags on the dash of your car on a hot day works rather well for the wood.

Big mistake. You now have the disease so be careful as they will begin to take over your life. Don't ask me how I know.

You can also reload with cast lead bullets to reduce it to 13 cents a round

Not bad but keep an eye open for a coupon. They honor their own coupons for 30 days. The $180 is a 'sale' price (Orig $200) but they do 10% off firearms now and then and they're stackable with sales... so $20 more off if you find one online.

Priv P is down around 60 something cents. And its brass / boxer so collect the used shells.
