I have an arisaka that i cannot figure out... I think it is a variation of the type 99 because of the single gas port, but i cant find anything about the stamps and the serial number. Ive hade one person think that it may be a trainer, but the barrel has a twist inside of it. Except for the rear sight, all numbers on the rifle are matching. it is also missing the front sight. The rifle was my grandfathers and it had been sporterised, but i dont know if it was his doing. Any information would be great!

Pic of the characters that would be under the Mum?

The very last character will be "type". We say "Type 99" whereas Japanese say "99 Type"March 29- April 5, 2019- The Million Mag March. Thank you, Judge Benitez and all the vendors

Stupid question... Is the mum and the crysthanamum the same thingComment

So either the mum was ground down really nice and the current symbol was stamped on, or there was never a mum. It is odd to see the different characters and numbers on it. I cant determine if it was a trainer, if it was re issued in another country, or if it is a hidden gem that is worth millions. If somebody actually knows, please chip in!!Comment

According to the book, there was a super rare and unexplained double circle version, one circle inside the other. No mention of anything without a mum.
You could give restoration a try:

I seem to recall some rifles had different markings, school rifles in particular. The Mum was for military rifles.

There is some info on the archive of an old web site here:

I researched that archive before and no luck. At first i thought i had the korea stamp on it, but the archive was lacking the circle inside it. I also thought navy too, but its odd that it only has roman style numbers on itComment
