    some C&R questions

    Hello all,

I just recently started seriously getting into guns, and have decided that I want to start off my collection with a mosin 91/30 and possibly an m44. I filled out the c&r application and sent it off thinking in a month or so I'd be able to order my mosin online and have it delivered to my door.

Imagine my extreme disappointment when today I learned about AB 809. I'm now not sure what to do. I only applied for this license because I reasoned it would save me the FFL transfer fees, but if I am reading this law correctly I now have to transfer anyway even though I have a c&r license? It looks like I can apply for a COE and still have them delivered to my doorstep, but it seems like a lot of hassle for just one or two rifles.

Since I've already spent the 30 on a c&r license, do you think I should just apply for the COE and then order a couple rifles online? my hesitance with this is it seems pretty invasive to get finger printing done for just an old rifle. So would it make more sense just to order them to a local FFL and pay the transfer fee? I think around here its like $70-100 for each gun.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, as i'm quite a noob. Thanks

Get the COE. Everyone starts out thinking that they are only going to get a couple of rifles. Very few actually stop at that.

It sucks that you need a COE, but if you want the rifles without the 10 day wait and sans fees (except the $19 registration fee), it's the best way to go. It will pay for itself after your first purchase if you had to pay the LGS fees for transferring it.

BTW, right now it's only two rifles but that will change quicker than you think. Buy a safe that's much larger than you would ever need and watch it fill up.

I would just get the COE. If you are planning to get into C&R firearms, you will soon be ordering more than 1 or 2 rifles. Re: the fingerprint, even if you go through a local FFL you will need to submit a thumb print.

The other way is to have them shipped to an FFL01 in Reno or LV, pick them up there and import to CA. Register + $19 per within 5 days of importation. Just order everything at once, Mosins, Mausers, K31, SKS, CZ50, CZ82 (need to limit mag to 10 rds), Walther, Tokarev, etc.

In LV NFA worked well for me. $25.00 transfer fee for up to three firearms, $5.00 for each additional firearm ($25.00 NV Dept of Public Safety Background Check is not required since you have FFL03).

welcome sir! I considered getting a c&r for a long time but never quite got around to it, probably because it would drive me to the poor house. now that 809 basically ruined it, I have no intention of getting it while in California, but if it's something you want to pursue, it'd likely be well worth your while to get your COE and continue to mail-order stuff, although you do still have to self-register and pay the extortion fee. to me it just isn't the same and my c&r purchases are pretty much over for now. your experience may vary, good luck whatever you decide.

The COE is the only way now to not get gouged by transfer fees. It will cost you about $100 initially, but it is only $22 annually after that.

Your 03 is still good out of state. Take a trip to Prescott and load up. Heck, trick your wife or girlfriend and tell her it's a long weekend vacation to the AZ mountains! Then hit all the shops and load up after dropping her off at the spa.

If that doesn't work there's always the marketplace here if you just want a couple of Mosins...

If you are heading out of state, always take you FFL03 with you. You never know what you may find. If you just happen to be taking the wife/gf to Lake Tahoe or Las Vegas for the weekend, definitely pick up your C&R orders while you're there.

I read (here somewhere) that Costa Mesa po-pos are charging $81. I'm on the fence about it (especially with the lack of space in the safe). But it might be worth the $81 just for the, "try again, Sacramento" factor.

That and voting some of these jokers out.
