    Kendog--

That's a great question that's been debated for as long as I've been doing these matches, but I'm a relative newbie compared to a lot of these guys.

Google provided me with the following link to a thread on the CMP forum:

Bob S seems to be the local expert, and he could only find that it was "issued" on certain M/38 carbines and possibly some M/41b sniper rifles, per Dana Jones's book, The Crown Jewels. If anyone has a copy of the book, we could double check.

It does seem pretty clear that none of the 29" barreled rifles being shot in our matches are M/38's, and pretty certain that they weren't M/41b's given the straight bolt handles. But I'm not an expert on this....

    More info:
Hello all. New Swede Mauser as I am mainly a US rifle collector (1917, 1903, 03-A3 and M1). Have an M96 and would like to get a fine rear sight adjuster. I would like to get a Metallverken Vasteras or similar contraption. Please point me to the right direction on who is selling what...

Post 11 from swede seems to indicate that only the M55 sight on an M/41b would be "as-issued".....

I believe being a church goer every Tuesday is a big factor coupled with a sweet shooting M96. I agree that even if your give either Vern or Paul a sling shot, and they will still win matches. I can only imagine the possibility if both start shooting a "hyper accurate" $89 Mosin.

Yep copy and paste "Vern or Paul".
I'll give my garand m1d a try before I get my hands dirty from another Mosin. I need to get the muzzle crown cut and to work up some loads.

btw, is the right cheek rest for a M1D? scope is on the left side of the receiver.

What is wrong with your Garand muzzle? Is it that badly damaged that you need to get it recut? I received my match M96 with a damaged muzzle but all it took are couple of different sizes ball bearings and some lapping compound and it was fixed.

I'm telling you go to Big-5 and invest in that $89 Mosin and you will win the match for sure.

That cheek piece will work. Not right for originality but will work. If you want it quick I have a new one I'll sell you for the same price as Sarco. PM me if you want it.

while the results were not surprising, generally the swede and swiss tear this up, I was happy to see some wildcards in there, especially the dutch Beaumont. that guy had bigger balls than anyone else put together at this shoot in my opinion, lol. also super-cool to see the argentine mausers, as I know they are great rifles. no turks and only one 98/29 was kind of a shocker, as those are great rifles as well. I would seriously love to see more variety, I know there's some guys with '91 and 41 carcanos that could do alright in this. mine are all carbines and do ok with no wind and good ammo, but the long rifles would be better, as well as arisakas. limiting factor with both of those are the sights. no british enfields in there? well, I'm not going to say I'm surprised by that really. it'd be really cool to have a battle-sights carbine shoot. I think the playing field there would be pretty damn level. always great to see the results of these matches though, especially when there's cool stuff involved. someday i'll have to get to one, although I'm not likely to shoot in it.

Im seriously considering shooting my Gewehr 88 Commission rifle next month, if I can get a reasonable load developed. Same thing for the MAS 36, need dies & brass though. Will shoot any new one as long as I can fit it in a second relay. Primary rifle is gonna be my Swiss 96/11 though...need to stick with one for a while so I can get my scores up!

Knucklehead, Pala has a vintage bolt gun match the 5th Sunday of the month (next one is March 30) that is similar to the one up north. I haven't had a chance to go yet, but I've heard it's fun to compete in.

I shot an '09 Argentine Mauser and a 98/29 Persian in the "open class", which allows scopes. Before anyone jumps on me, know that they were both drilled and tapped by previous owners.

I've gotten a couple of 38's with the Persian, but the best I've done with the Argentine is a 34. For some reason, I just can't get it to shoot with the Persian, even though it is very similar.

One problem with the Swedish Mausers is the light bullets that they fire (140 gr), which sometimes "ring" the rams. I've have yet to get a ringer with the 200 gr 8mm bullet.

Mustang, what are those strange looking black objects on top of the receivers of your otherwise very nice Mausers? Whatever they are, it must help increase one's hit probability with scores of 34s and 38s. Maybe that's what I need as I suck at this game.

hmm, I guess I could fix my G43. shooting 8mm is fun. going to be a while, I have to get a stock, metal and scope with mount. Mine is sporterized.
