    Thinking about Garand

Hey guys, I am thinking about joining a Garand family, seen one for around 600 on CMP sales, any advice on what should I look for, is this one a right one to start the collection, what is your experience with CMP? Thanks for all your input.

Join CMP, order one, and just be patient. I ordered one and it was well worth $650 shipped. Buy some HXP too.

HXP is Greek surplus .30-06 ammo the CMP sells.

İ bought my service grade hra from cmp a couple years ago and it is my favorite gun i own. A blast to shoot and more accurate than i am. It is well worth it.

All my CMP Garands have been good shooters in nice condition.

My opinion? Buy One. You will be able to sell it for more than you paid if you decide you don't like it, but chances are you'll love it. My favorite gun to shoot, aside from my .22's.

And yes - buy the HXP Greek surplus ammo they sell, while you're at it.

Go for a service grade. You will be more than happy you did.

Too bad the new Californa laws are in effect as there is nothing more fun than seeing your Garand delivered to you front door. Oh well, it's still (I think) worth paying taxes, DROS, registration, and a 10 day wait at your local FFL as it is that good of a rifle.

CMP is a class organization. You will not find a Garand in better condition for the price from another retailer. As mentioned, you need to be patient as they have a back log of orders. Some CMP requirements:
                          • You need to be a member of an affiliated club. I highly recommend The Garand Collectors Association http://www.thegca.org/. For $25 membership you get a quarterly magazine "The GCA Journal" and a DVD of "America's Rifle". Those alone are worth the $25. The GCA will send your membership info to the CMP once you join.
                          • You need proof of "Marksmanship or other Firearms Related Activity". For me a California Handgun Safety Certificate worked.

Besides, the supply of rifles is dwindling, when the CMP stops taking orders, you'll see the price of a run of the mill Garand double.

The handgun safety cert was sufficient? I'll be damned
