    91/30 mosin, barrel blocked?

My brother bought a mosin last year, he asked me to check the barrel blockage for him. Sure enough, some thing lodged 8" from muzzle end and about 6" in from breech. I grab a1/4" bar stock I had, wrapped some tape around it and start tapping away, these pieces of plastic come dropping out of the barrel and finally a slug. The rifling looks ok, has been counter bored. Looks like it went thru an armorer, bolt and receiver are the only matching numbers, all iron looks ok, stock has been shellacked. What up? Been demilitarized?
I know this is kinda long, but I want to help my bro. out, don't want to spend the $ on a gunsmith if this thing is unusable. Thought of cleaning bore really well and tapping a lead weight thru to measure bore, rifling.
    Ideas anybody?

So were there 2 things in there, or was it 14" long?

    Where did he buy it?

No idea where he bought it. The plug was some plastic tube about 16" long that came out in pieces, and a small maybe 1/2" slug from the breech end. Honestly the rifle appears fine. Externally it looks great, like I said even the stock has been shellacked. Dropped a straight edge on the barrel and it appears straight. You figure if something was wrong with the barrel, why would the armorer finish the rifle?
      Thanks for any help.

        Maybe a failed slugging?

sounds like a failed attempt to knock something out ended up with more junk in it. should be fine. clean it up, slug the bore if you so choose, but I'd just go shoot some surplus through it. never heard of demilled mosins thus far. counterbore was likely done during a rearsenal, lots of them are. while some see that as a downside, you have to figure it was done for a reason and is going to be more accurate than if they left crappy rifling in it.

Yeah you guys I thought it might be a failed slugging also. Kinda what I was thinking of doing to measure the bore also. I didn't know mosins weren't demilled. Like I said, it looks like this thing has been freshly rearsenaled, stock dripping with shellac, iron looks good, counterbored. I was worried the armorer found the barrel outta spec., but heck then they woulda just stripped it down, tossed the barrel and put the good stuff onto other rifles. Think I'll get my brother to spit polish it and we'll run some surplus rounds thru it.

Sounds like they were slugging it the wrong way. From what I've read, you want to start at the muzzle. The bore narrows toward the muzzle, so start at the muzzle where it's the tightest, and then it'll be easy going

Good thing you checked and not just going out and firing it. BOOM!

Seems that's what happened. Classic lead slug tapped in with a nylon stick trying to measure the bore, nylon tube snaps, doh!! Kinda peeved the guy didn't let my brother know, coulda been ugly. slug was wedged in.
Rifling looks pretty good. Little scrubbing will tell for sure.
I thought the rifle might have been demilled, but hey, they woulda just chucked the barrel and salvaged the rest for rebuilding other rifles.
Thanks for the input guys, gives me a bit more confidence !

The blockage might have been a capsule of Secret Soviet Micro-Film.
