    Pitting Ok?

    Hi all,

Decided to douse the SKS with mineral spirits today and noticed this:

Any major concern? That was the only area that I saw with that type of rust/pitting. I dabbed some Frog Lube on it...not sure how much of a concern it should be.

    Thanks.

One of mine had the same thing, nothing to worry about. I took a dremel and brushed off the rust (brass brush), lubed it, put it back together, shoots excellent. It did take a bit of bluing off though. There is a method that I read about, after I did it, that will not take the bluing off, I can't remember now. Then again, this is no trophy rifle, just a shooter

no biggie, try some kroil and rub it with a copper penny, or just keep it clean and leave it alone.

Since 1983 pennies are copper plated zinc. They are only 2.5% copper now.

I found that http://www.big45metalcleaner.com/ products works amazingly well when removing rust without removing bluing, and it does a wonderful job in cleaning bores, especially older ones.

If you doused it in mineral spirits then you have effectively degreased it. You need to reapply oil to the metal. This is not a job for Frog lube. Get some CLP and scrub the rusted spots.

The oil softens the rust, and the edge of the coin loosens it.

The stubborn base corrosion and pitting will abate the copper off the coin, and this will displace and scour out the pits.

As the copper is soft, it will not effect hard steel, bluing, or park... as long as there is oil to lubricate it. The oil will also flush both the copper and rust out.

Just wipe w/ a paper towel and repeat as necessary.
