    Finally picked up my K98k

Work is terrible. It makes me money, but leaves me little time to enjoy it. Took me a while to get to the shop to pick it up. Stupid 10-day wait.

Anyway, here it is. A nice Gustloff-Werke of 1943.

Really hope it's not a turd.

Two things I did notice with it is that the barrel/sling band is on backwards and the stock might have been refinished, I personally can't tell. And the bolt doesn't match, but it matches itself.

    Every other part matches though.

Looks like an honest bolt mismatched, non-RC K98K to me. I'd be happy to have it in my collection!

Is the stock matching as well? Easy ways to tell if the stock's been refinished is if points that should have sharpish edges, such as the bolt knob cutout, is overly rounded off, or if cartouches are faded/missing, and generally if it looks "too new", or has some unusual finish on the wood that it shouldn't.

The wood appears it may have been lightly sanded, but I'm not an expert on that

Looks like you got a very nice piece

I forgot to mention the bore.

8mm Mausers were love at first sight for me. Having had Czechs and Yugos and a couple K98's, the smoothness of the action and absence of a sticky bolt or issues with hard primers is what sets the K98 apart from the pack. Looks like you got a keeper.

Looks really nice. Yes, the lower band is on backwards. The sling slot needs to be on the other side of the rifle.

Waffenamps on the stock look crisp? Numbers match inside stock? I am not entirely sure on the 43 Gustloff's but I believe this was the period where they stopped stamping the rifle serial on the outer stock.

749 is the waffenamt? That means it was a Gustloff gun and not the Oberndorf BCD's, which where 135. Any 135's on there, they where Oberndorf parts.

According to the books, they made 325,000 that year. 1100 to 5200 FF, so 2425 G is fairly early.

I was able to get an RC a couple of years ago. This maybe sacrilegious but I replaced the front sight with a front sight blank from Brownells. My old sight would shoot about 2 feet high at 100 yards. These rifles were sighted in at probably 300 to 400 yards. Now I'm point of aim point of impact at 100 yards and luckily the rear sight ladder works all the way out to 600 yards. I run the rear sight up to 600 and I can hit the metal out at Angeles at 600. It really makes a difference. I did the same with my M24/47.

                          Looks like a nice specimen.

How much did it set you back?

Are you gonna reload for it or shoot some surplus?

I wish I could say the same of mine. But then again, mine is a 1945. This makes me wonder whether it should just wear a .308 or 30.06 barrel. It would be easier to shoot.

Looks like a legit vet bring-back rifle. M/M bolts are super common on those. The metal finish looks original. if all that's happened to it since 1945 is the stock got sanded, you did really well! (probably explains why the barrel band got turned around-whoever sanded it just stuck it back on wrong)

                            Nice find!

I remember the link you posted in my previous thread about this. I don't believe they stamped the exterior of the stocks for this year.
