    1941 Johnson Rifle Issues

    Hi all,

I finally got around to shooting my Johnson rifle recently but ran into some trouble.

It does one of two things. It either rips a small chip off of the case rim when trying to extract, failing to do so. OR when it will extract it short strokes and does not eject the spent round.

When shooting HXP is fails to extract because of the case rim failure every time. I shot some Remington RA52 as well and it was a mix between those two issues.

Any idea what might be going on? Thanks for the help!

Corrosion or pitting in chamber? This is a short recoil action no gas system to leave crud behind.. This assuming the action is assembled correctly, sound in it's components, clean and lubricated properly.

    Good luck

I had the same issue with my 1941 Johnson. Using HXP it actually ripped the entire base off the case which subsquently got lodged lower in the action. The bolt locked up and the remainder of the case was lodged in the chamber, took someone a lot more familiar with the system than I to get everything back in sync. Someone told me that he thought the Greek HXP brass was softer than other GI surplus, not sure if that is true or not. Have not shot it since, partly due to its value, but I keep threatening to bring it out to one of our silhouette matches.

Try some old military .30-06 before you start messing with things.

If it won't eat that, maybe it needs new springs?

I go with Jack, I'd start with the chamber and look for pitting or rust. Something is causing the fired case to stick to the chamber.
