it's good to measure both groove and land diameter, because if there's a major disparity in certain guns it produces widely different results with different bullet diameters. the 6.5 carcano is one that responds in weird ways to bullet styles, weights, and diameters, as I'm learning. mosins will not be quite so sensitive but still more so than others, given the wide variation in grooved diameters. there are other examples in the old rifles like 8mm, which can vary in groove diameter from .318-.330+ so slugging is a good idea with many of these funny old guns. I'm not preaching because I haven't done any of mine yet, but I plan to and soon.

Note: a 5/16 dowel is just barely too big for a Mosin bore. I'll have to go back and get a 1/4 dowel. 1/4 just looks like it'd snap, even in short lengths

Edit: I just saw it said a 1/4 dowel. Was looking it up real quick on my phone and didn't see it

Yup, 5/16 = 0.3125 just over the typical bullet size

If you can find 1/4" oak dowel rods, much sturdier than pine

I slugged my M39 using the method in the link and it worked quite well. I had to use the tear drop shaped 1/8 oz weights becasue no one had the egg shaped ones in stock in that size. The six inch dowl rod pieces are pretty sturdy and easy to remove from the receiver once the lead weight comes out. I thought I would really have to whack it to get the lead weight through but it moves through the bore pretty easily.
