Firing pin protrusion is critical with Mosins. That's what the egg shaped multi-tool is for. Unlike Mauser bolts which can only go together one way, you have to pay attention with the Mosins. I have gotten a face full of smoke / hot gas and a ruined firing pin before from a pierced primer so I know it isn't fun.

I talked to J&G today, they told me to buy mil surplus ammo and try it again, guess i'll order some and see what happens. I'll still check the firing pin and head space. Now I need to find a place that will let me fire magnetic rounds.Comment

Who is the importer, and does it have the Russian <ГИС> diamond proof mark from the Klimovsk Proof House?

If so, I would be really surprised if there is anything wrong with the headspace. It was proofed before it could be exported from Russia, and from what I have seen and read, a headspace check is part of the proofing process.
Did your rifle come with a Bolt tool?

It has the proof marks, and I looked at the vid's about setting the firing pin, my firing pin is ok per my bolt tool, while I was there I watched a bunch of videos, seems to be quite a following! Kinda fun watching people contradicting each other.

One test you can do is to take the bolt head out, put it in the breach with the tab facing upwards, and try and push it into battery. Then wiggle the end of the bolt head and see how much play is in there.
Usually I have found that, without the bolt body, the head will not even go into battery. If it does, and there is a lot of wiggle, there are probably problems.
Another test you can do is to put the bolt in the gun, cock it, and feel the play at the rear of the bolt (the disk shaped handle) and try and see how much play there is towards the bolt head. If it shimmies up and down loosely it could mean serious problems.
The bolt head is really the only thing that needs to be tight, and if you have multiple mosins you can see the wide variety of sizes they used. For instance, my sniper bolt head is way too small for another standard refurb 91/30, and that rifles bolt head won't even fit into the sniper's receiver.
Isn't the size stamp on the bolt head? I thought the 0, 1, 2, etc had to do with size?Originally posted by doggieSomeone must put an end to this endless bickering by posting the unadulterated indisputable facts and truth."The California matrix of gun control laws is among the harshest in the nation and are filled with criminal law traps for people of common intelligence who desire to obey the law." - U.S. District Judge Roger T.
