Slugged the bore, it measures out at .323. Now, time to load some pills for it in time for the match....maybe

Mine came from South America via SOG. Wood was a mess, but barrel was like brand new, it slugged @ .320. I use 16 grains 2400 with 180 grain cast bullets from an old Ideal mold. Shoots great, very little kick. Hardest to get was some Mannlichler clips, this gun still has the original magazine. Lots of fun to shoot, kinda like a 71/84, but kicks less.

Great rifle and story...Always nice to recover something with so many great memories!!!

They also made these rifles in a carbine version as the Kar 88..It kicks like a mule The bright receiver and bolt is correct for these. Every screw and piece is numbered to the carbine.

I've been reading about the carbine, have a serious case of wants....like that turned down bolt!

Very nice carbine! I used to see these fairly often at gun shows in western Pa in the early 70s. I think it was because they were a handy length and kept unmolested for hunting by the white tail deer hunters of the era. I also used to see sported Gew 88s that were also used by deer hunters but very few unmolested examples.

OP, that's a great story. Those GEW 88s do have a silky smooth action. SVT, could it be that the front sling loop is on the wrong slide? It doesn't look like most cavalry/carbine mounts, but that's a nice one. Are thay still to be found? PAX

Darn someone noticed ... These pic's are a few years old. Worry not ,it was changed back a few years ago when another sharp eyed guy noticed I had it backwards after cleaning....

I guess I should shoot some new photos.....

                  Good eye!!!!!!!

They are not real common.. I had two, but sold one off years ago...Kept this one....

I really screwed up though, as the same fellow I got them from also had a real nice 1871 Mauser carbine....I just brain farted and didn't get it too...I have never seen another since....I really regret missing that rifle.....

Shot the Gew 88 after the silhouette match yesterday, it goes bang everytime....just not sure where the bullets are gonna go! The battle sight is supposed to be set at 250 meters but using Remington commercial it was WAY off. Only had 16 rounds for it and just couldn't get it tightened up. Maybe some reloads will do the trick.

Remington bullets are .321 and if your bore is .323 and worn at the muzzle then this could be your accuracy problem. I shoot Sierra 150gr .323s through my 88/05/35 and get great accuracy.

                                More like 400.

Aim about a foot low at 100 yards.
