Did you buy one from the ebay link I posted a while back? I am starting to question the strength of the 1/2" target from that vendor as well. I have divots in my targets. Maybe someone was shooting AP? Maybe subpar material.

My target is fixed [welded ear back on ] but i am sure the concentrated fire power of 10 high powered rifles for 2 hours will break something. The chain will be the sacrificial lamb . I am bringing extra chain and hooks.
maybe we need a tip jar for steel plate repairs our best hope is for lots of steel plates showing up to spread the damage evenly.
The shooter is the wink link in this situation... Not necessarily you as much as Armistice haha( I thought I took down someones target too a few shoots ago). I took my setup to the desert a few months back and I only lost one chain link- we were shooting quite a bit of C&R's as well... I was making my 10"x1/2" gong flip over the target stand(think momentum on a swing set) with my Garand so we weren't being too careful either.

On a serious note I found that hangers are good cheap fastener to keep plates on chains. You can even use multiple hanger segments to connect different chain links to the target so if the link closest to the target takes a direct hit and fails the next link will still be attached- assuming the hanger wire is still intact.

I tried coat hanger rod as a link last time and even if i twisted it real good the shock of the bullet impact would pull out the wire every time.

think so, don't remember the vendor's name now but I got 2 supposedly ar-500 8" diameter, 3/8 thick and we got a bunch of holes in them, lol. my first hit, with .303 and my soft-point handloads almost went through. the 7.62x54r surplus went through it like a laser. oh well, I figure they might be good for one more shoot before I can them and get some different stuff. one of my cheap home depot shepherd hooks took a hit and folded in half, so I bent it around so it'll still hold the gong. I'm a cheapass, what can I say?

no worries, we all shot the piss out of the sorry things, that's what I brought 'em for. lesson learned, buy better stuff. Jamie's got a tough target, too bad his stand gets the crap shot out of it every time and falls apart, lol. if it ain't one thing it's another. I'm just glad this get-together keeps happening. I hope it's bringing more members to the club as well, and that they don't mind all of us weirdos hanging out there. i'll probably join as a limited member once things get better for me financially. for now, i'll go as often as I can, but it won't be every time. next month is pretty much a sure thing though, since my brother will be just back from Afghanistan and I know he wants to shoot. we'll bring the FAL and the VZ-58 too, and who knows what else?

I saw the way that you twisted them at one of the shoots and I didn't want to say anything at the time but it seemed to me that you cut them a bit short and only gave them one twist- I think the first shot knocked the target off the chain IIRC. I have used them a few times now and I have been pretty happy with them, they are susceptible to bullets just like anything else but if you give them a few twists or even a few wraparounds the chain link and the target hole it takes some of the pressure off. Try it again and you may find a pretty good and cheap(if you get clothes dry-cleaned these things are free) way to keep your target attached.

There were actual holes in yours? Damn that sucks.

                            AR-500

Holes in 3/8" AR-500 at 100 yards?!?!? If so, that's not properly made AR-500. The day I was at WEGC at the same time you folks were there, we all shot my 18" square, 3/8" thick AR-500 plate probably 75-100 times. I hit it myself about 50-60 times with my PSL and VEPR, both in 7.62X54, shooting both light and heavy ball surplus steel core.

They all splattered like a fly on a windshield. Not even a dent.

Since then, I've shot that plate with steel core 8mm and 147 gr. steel core .308 pulled bullet's I've reloaded. It must have 300+ hits on it and that plate still looks like new. Not so much as a crease or dent. Many of these were at the 500M pad in back, but many were also at the 100 yard range up front.

I got mine from the AR-500 plate guy who sells at Ontario gun show and I believe Costa Mesa. That one has held up so well that I went back this last weekend and bought an 18' round one and a flipper/tumbler one that my son and I can blast.

Not very expensive either. I think the round and square ones were $85 each. He had spring steel hooks bundled, 6 for $5. Bought a bunch of these too as they start to bend with the concussion. I've had to hammer them back into shape a few times now. I've also shot through a few of them. Darn eyes are getting old

Every other Sunday is rough for me - this is one that I cannot make unfortunately.

I paid 45 bucks on line for the 3/8 AR 500 i have. A lucky shot right on one of the ears broke it off after maybe 300 hits. 7.62-54r , 30-6 . 8 MM mauser no problem.
these targets are a learning process. I have found that the stand needs to be at least 2 feet from the target or it will get shot out. My A frame is about my 4th design. plenty of room around the plate keeps MOST stray bullets from hitting the frame. I now have thick washers at the bolt heads at the ears to protect them. Unfortunately as you beef up these things they tend to get big and heavy like a tiger tank.
