CMP Garand ammo?

Since this could be asked in like four forums, I've decided to post it here.

I just got my CMP Garand. I want to shoot it. Obviously I live in CA and with the threat of fires sparking up wherever a trigger is pulled is high. I'm going to Burro in a couple of weeks, and their magnet checks are in full swing. I have some Greek coming from CMP, but as stated cannot shoot that during fire season. I have read the Garand is made for milsurp ammo only, and shooting commercial powered ammo through it is a no-no. Is this true? Burro sells .30-06, but I don't want to mess up the rifle.

Some commercial ammo Is sometimes too powerful for M1 Garand. My reloading book offers special loadings for the M1 that are about 10% under normal loads. What happens when you shoot the higher powered ammo is it will bend your operating rod and they can be expensive to replace. I'm not positive but I think the Remington factory ammo with 150 grain bullets in their green and yellow box is safe to shoot but you will want to confirm that because I can't remember for sure. The M1 Garand was designed/intended to be fed 150 grain bullets.

As long as you shoot light weight bullets (around 150 gr) you will be ok. Don't shoot anything made for hunting since the powder load will be too much. You should check out Ammo Bros in Cerritos. They have a wide selection of safe ammo.

AFAIK it's the pressure from the powder that does it, not the grain weight of the bullet. There's a device you can buy that will negate this problem with commercial ammunition. My slurpee from 7-11 is negating my ability to remember what its called.

Inland Fish and Game in Highland has no ammo restrictions. It's further away than Burro, but the range is relatively well run. The target stand holders are numbered to each lane. You won't get crazy cross overs like at Angeles.

If you absolutely have to shoot at a range that won't allow any metallic type bullet (jacket and/or core) and you absolutely cannot reload, you can try the new Hornady ammo specifically designed for the M1 Garand:

Just ordered one from Midway.

I picked up some 150 gr. Winchester ammo today. Hope it will be a good combo.
