Christmas 91/30!!!!

My wife got me a 91/30 for Christmas!!!
From looking on the Mosin identification site it's a Russian made in 1943r by the barrel marking. All the #'s I can see match. I'm going to need help on what to do with this one y'all, it's my first c & r and I know NOTHING!
I'll get pics up later today after the kids have done the Santa deal & I get a little time alone with this Russian temptress

after you get a mosin and start to think about the history other rifles get boring. i segregated my shot guns,22 rifles and mini 14 to the back closet to rarely be seen now that i have a number of old military guns. they for me are just more fun.

Just clean off the cosmo and go shooting. It is a bolt action rifle with about 4 major parts. The only mildly tricky part is disassembly and proper reassembly of the bolt. Even that is super easy once you have done it 1-2 times.

Just wipe of as much of the surface cosmoline with a rag. Pull some patches through the bore. For the hard to get spot, just leave the rifle in the sun or take a blow drier to gently warm it up. That cosmoline has a low melting point and it'll just ooze out of the nooks and crannies and the stock too. It would be best to take apart your rifle prior to this. Look to YouTube or Surplusrifle.com for step disassembly and reassembly instructions.

After you disassemble the rifle, remove all cosmoline with mineral spirits. You will need a bucket or pan to soak metal parts in and a nylon scrub brush. Do the same with the bolt. Use a cleaning rod with brushes and patches to clean the bore. After cleaning use your preferred CLP. Sweat the cosmo out of the stock with a blow dryer, then apply a little furniture polish.

Best way to rid the bore & chamber of cosmo please?

Cleaning the chamber is very important, as a dirty chamber will cause the cases to stick in the chamber, making extraction very difficult.

I use a chamber brush made by ProShot but you can also use a 20 ga shotgun bore brush. Use a section of cleaning rod from one of those universal cleaning kits and mount the end of the rod in an electric drill. Dip the brush in some hoppes #9 and run the drill into the chamber just enough to get the brush into the main part of the chamber. Add a little more solvent and run it 10 or 20 seconds. Then use a dental pick or Q-tips to clean the extractor groove on the right side of the breech face... there is usually a lot of crap in there.

I mainly shoot reloads but copper-washed steel case surplus works well too. I do not like to shoot the enameled case ammo as it seems to stick in everything I have tried it in... not fun.

Is refinishing the stock taboo & considered a giant "bubba" faux pas?
I am unclear why making these particular rifles back to like new condition is such a big mistake? I understand the possibility of damaging the value of a collectible gun that may be a rare specimen, but making one that is a prolific milsurp rifle look good also seems to be frowned upon?
