well i just found out that the 59r chambering is extremely rare and it was only in single shot so i guess i posted this before i had all my info. anyway i figured that if i was gonna find mosin experts (or any c&r advice )this is the place to go! next aquisition is gonna be a fin m39 so im saving my federales for that now....

I don't know about the caliber issue, but I've heard these are pretty rough.

Too bad. Omega was selling those for $35 until about 3 months ago. I went to buy one and they raised it up from one week to the next on me. So I didn't. They are pretty beat up, but at that price they are OK.

7.62X59, that's a new one to me! I've heard of Century import caliber stamps being incorrect, or people sometimes reading the 4 as a 9 and advertising it as such.

Did a little yahooing here (I hate saying googling) and doubt there's such a round, but someone prove me wrong and fill me in please, ya got my curiosity up and I need to know!

Anyway let us know what you get, with a pic or two.

2-3 years ago I paid $100 for my navy arms import example, the Omegas are ROUGH I hear. I wonder how the whole Omega thing came about anyways since our Gov is picky about Chinese gun imports.

Some calgunners have shot my type 53 before at the defunct SGVGC. I also have a Russian 1947 dated M44. I gave my Polish version away to an 18yo on his birthday.

Rough or not, chances are a T-53 is going to be a great shooter. My T-53 has the nicest trigger pull of all my Mosins by far.

Some time back I bought a couple of cases of 7.62x54R from J & G in Prescott. I forgot where it came from but it was one of the eastern bloc countries. Anyway, the sealed wooden crates and cans were marked 7.62x59. I'd never heard of that round either so even though J & G assured me it was OK, I made then open everything up and show me before I took it. It was in fact 7.62x54R.

                      7.62x59? you sure the 5 is not a 3? Hence 7.62x39?

He is talking about the Czech surplus. The wooden crates are marked...

                        7.62 - 59

That is just the Czech name for 7.62x54R. It is their 7.62 round adopted in 1959. It's similar to the way we named 30-06.

I called Omega and asked about his current crop of Type 53 and he said these are better than the bottom of the barrel $35 ones he had before. He said most are matching.

I got a pair of the $35 ones, and they are pretty rough, I'll let you know how these new ones are
