Mauser Pre-War Standard Modell (one last C&R hurrah before 01/14)

I bought this rifle almost a month ago and it had to stay at the store due to it being a consignment gun. I received some flak for buying it because another poster put it up to ask what it was. 2 days later since no one had moved on it I went and bought it.

Anyway, i had never heard of this variant before buying it, but I figured it was well worth the asking price. It is a banner Mauser Standard Modell which apparently was made in the early 30's and was Germany's way to shamalam the restrictions which were implemented after WW1.

This rifle is pretty nice and mostly matching. Everything but the bolt matches and the bolt matches all to itself. The finish seems to be all original. There are a few very minor specks of freckling but no pitting or real rust anywhere. The bore is about 85-90% and gets cleaner every time I run another swab through it. No counterbore.

There are some differences from a wartime K98.

No magazine stop on the last round
    Straight bolt
    Different rear sling attachment
No front sight hood (I think it came like that)

I tested the action with dummy rounds and everything functions perfectly. I put some feed n wax on the stock, but it does not appear to have been refinished. I don't know what the value is on a rifle like is, but I got it pretty cheap.

    Pics, of course

I think I might hate you. And while I'm spouting hate, I also hate SVT40.

That is such a pretty stock on that one. Does that rear sling attachment hinge out? Is that a button of some sort on it? Good score sir!

First you are chopping up historic vintage rifles and sticking them in cheap and nasty looking plastic "dildo" stocks that look like some kind of futuristic sex toy that gay space aliens stick up each other's butts.
Next thing you know, you think "Deliverance" is a love story.

Exactly. It swivels out and there is a button on the side that unlocks the buckle to attach the sling. As a lefty, I always have to remove the sling from regular K98's to shoot because otherwise that buckle sits right on my cheek weld.

Very nice! Is it just a bolt mismatch? What I'd really love to find is a Banner K, a very similar gun but with more wartime features, like a turned down bolt. The '30s production guns were really a cut above as far as how slick the action feels and overall fit and finish though, in my opinion.

Yes, the bolt is the only thing that is a mismatch. Weird, because the straight bolt is correct for the Standard Modell. Another weird thing is that the rifle was very clean but the bolt was packed with cosmoline and grime before I cleaned it up. And yes, the action and overall fit of everything is very good on this rifle.

These were being made with commercial quality at the time. That's what makes them rare to find complete, like the Mexican Small Ring 98's, very desirable actions for custom rifles when they were plentiful and cheap.

                            Great looking rifle Bobby.

I would love to see how it groups.
I would love to see a range report for one or two of your rifles........
However, i suspect, like myself, you spend too much money on guns and not enough on ammo.

Nah, I have a decent supply of 8mm. I put one of my RC's through the paces a few weeks ago out in the desert and it ran like a champ. These things are no fun unless you shoot them!
