Sporterized 1903...What is going on here?

Here is a link to my gunbroker auction for a sporterized 1903 rifle. I figured it would go for $250 to $300 and even considered putting a buy-it-now price of $350 on it. It is going nuts in my opinion. What am I missing here? Did someone famous do the conversion?

It has a star gauged barrel.. Probably a ex national match Springfield...If it was in it's original condition it would be worth thousands....

Check out your pic of the muzzle... See that little star mark? Thats what makes it special.. Plus it looks like it was well done...Probably from the 50's

Also notice the tapped and filled screw holes on the right rear side of the receiver...There were previously precision peep sight mounted there... Definitely a match Springfield...

Most of the conversions I have seen do very poor when put up for sale, and I figured that this one was no different since I do not think there is one thing left on the rifle that is original. The scope is I guess, but who knew?

I knew....... yes still a C&R. It was made more than 50 years ago.

Nice looking rifle, beautifully redone. Doesn't interest me as a C&R, tho.

There's more to this than just a bubba-fied 1903. Whoever bought it could sell the scope for close to $200, especially if it has a post reticle. The rings are worth over $200 if they are legit, since they have a square top instead of the rounded top on the commercial rings. Unfortunately the base is not correct but if someone was looking to make an 03-AForgery, they could mount the base/rings/scope on a drilled 03 and have a legal sniper for the matches.

Well, it has a wood stock (but not original) with original barrel and is still blued albeit a reblue. I think "original configuration" is one of the final frontiers of creative interpretation in the gun world - I'd vote no, it's not C & R because too much has been done to it. That it is over 50 years old, or that the work may have been done +50 years ago is beside the point.

What if was a "remanufactured" 1903 by santa barbara in the late 50's early 60's ?? -- Still C&R? Or one of the many m98's redone by these companies. ?

Well, I don't have to worry about the C&R aspect, as the buyer does not have one. He is using his normal FFL. The buyer called right after the auction ended, so I guess the deal will be going through. He plans on making a sniper out of it.

The more I look at the bolt on this rifle, the more I am thinking it may be a real 03-A4 bolt body. It is chromed, but it could be re-parkerized and would be worth $400+ It's hard to tell from the angle of the photos, but I am holding an A4 bolt up the the monitor and comparing the angles and it looks pretty close to me
