    Cosmolined stock refinished?

So I plan on refinishing the stock on my SKS thats in jail and was wondering, when the gun heats up cosmo usually sweats out of the wood right? would it be wise to shoot it a good amount before finishing the stock to try and get out as much as i can?
Or would the Polyurethane, tung oil, shellac, whatever i plan on using etc just trap it in the wood?

If you strip the wood with paint remover and wash acetone or thinner it will remove the cosmoline from the pores of the wood. The acetone or thinner wont raise the grain and you wont have to sand very much.
I finish and refinish furniture and cabinets for a living. Ive done My type 53 mosin and have had no problem with cosmoline after.

Note that shooting it will only cause the areas around the barrel and receiver to sweat. When I was shooting my Mosin, only the upper handguard had sweat

Use a heat gun and sweat it out.

I've done the "paper towel wrap inside a trash bag on my dashboard of my truck in the middle of summer" version, haha. No joke, the wood was almost too hot to touch

Doesn't it make your car smell like Cosmo? And it's winter so I'll probably be out on the garage with a blow dryer and tinfoil or something haha

Sweat out as much as possible with heat. Solvents only remove the cosmo near the surface. CAREFUL use of a paint-stripping heat gun can substitute for the black-plastic-bag-on-the-dashboard trick, which yes, can make it too hot to handle with bare hands.

Solvents at the end, prior to the first stain or finish coat.

                Crunch

I thought all C&R nuts had a cosmo car freshener (Brb, I'm going to patent that)

And honestly, not really. Not even for a day. Then again, I was messing with it, so maybe I didn't notice the smell. If anything, it'd prob only be for a day or two

I sit my oil soaked stocks on a box in front of our gas fireplace while we watch TV, I get up during commercials to wipe off the oozing oils.

Just throw it in the oven after the turkey is done cooking, that cosmo will sweat out in no time.

if my car always smelled like cosmoline i'd drive it a lot more, lol. honestly I never de-cosmo'd my mosins because they didn't seem to have much on them. after a lot of shooting they tend to sweat some out, but that's ok with me. I have stripped and refinished a few things, but they (carcanos and a mauser) didn't seem to have been stored in cosmoline so I really can't complain. if you don't have a place to leave gun parts in your car or don't want to, if you don't have a heat gun, a blow-dryer on hot will accomplish the goal. when it gets hot shooting you may still get some sweat now and then, but it's a thing of beauty and smells great!
