Yes, you are missin' a BIG thing.
Those splines will loosen up if you apply the proper or excessive torque to the plug to tighten it, and then the subsequent torque to loosen it the next time.
Get a pair of channel-lock pliers, preferably smooth-jawed, and a piece of leather, cardboard, or 1-1/4 web belt. Line the jaws and grab the Gas cylinder at the sight base, from the under side, to isolate the torque from the splines.
Otherwise... Peening, or just a loose front sight, are in your future.

I guess I'm pretty primitive on my gass plug tool. I use the handle of an old kitchen serving spoon with electrical tape wrapped around it. It happened to be the right contour to fit the plug and the excess electrical tape snugs it up so I don't have any metal on metal contact. Bent the rest of the spoon at 45deg so it acts like a handle. My plug wasn't in all that tight from the CMP so it didn't take much spoon torque. The flex in the spoon handle also prevents me from ever over tightening it. Necessity is the mother of invention. I'm sure I have a screw driver that would do the job but I kind of like my spoon tool.Last edited by Shorthair; 11-19-2013, 11:39 AM.karma ?
