does anyone own an M1 Carbine that cycles/runs smoothly? I'd like to learn from you.

I have a 1943 inland M1 Carbine that fails to load/feed/extract/ & jams just about every other round.

in the 200 rounds i've put through it this month, i think i had ONE magazine go through properly without having to clear a jam...

if anyone out there has a USGI carbine in good condition that runs great, i'd love to meet you at your local range and take a look at how it runs and see if there's anything on mine i should fix.

i'd provide all the ammo you shoot thru yours while we do the testing.

    let me know!

OP, I'll ask the basic questions...

        - I'll assume the gun is properly greased/lubed?
        - Have you tried different mags?
        - Have you tried different ammo?

I have a National Postal Meter that runs like the proverbial Swiss watch...my buddy has a Rock-Ola that doesn't like steel-cased ammo all that much.
You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.
        Come on...what harm??

I've got 4 that run and run and run. I've only ever shot LC ball through them.

If you're in the SF East Bay, I'll be glad to take a look at yours.

              Questions:

              1) What ammo are you using?
              2) USGI or after market mags?
              3) Is the rifle cleaned and lubed properly?
              4) Is the gas port/nut clean and functional?

              And Question #5:

I could use a parts gun - wanna sell it?

Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

I have a '44 Inland from CMP which had the same issues. I replaced the bolt guts and now she runs just fine.

Which magazines are you using? The 15 round GI magazines always work the best.

Some of the other makes of ten and five round magazines have issues with feeding or tossing the last round out on the ground.

To check the magazines place a cartridge into the top and see if the casing is fully supported along the entire length. You may have to gently adjust the lip to achieve the proper contact. Use a piece of wood to press so the lip is not scratched or marred.

Also disassemble and clean the mags. Be sure that the spring goes back into the mag properly as well.

Last are you using FMJ or soft point, factory or reloads?

The recoil spring maybe your problem.

Mine doesn't like to work right either. I didn't have any GI mags to test, but my neighbor does, so we are going out soon to test out that. Sometimes I get a stove pipe, sometimes light primer strikes. I haven't shot it in a while, I think I used aguila and maybe sellior&bellot ammo. One day she will run like a top.

First you are chopping up historic vintage rifles and sticking them in cheap and nasty looking plastic "dildo" stocks that look like some kind of futuristic sex toy that gay space aliens stick up each other's butts.

My NPM op rod was worn. Caused the op rod to pop out and jam up the bolt. Replaced the op rod and spring and all is good now. Thanks to the guys on this sight for the advice.

If I had to make a guess, I would list the probable causes in order of most, to least, likely:

                            1. Magazines. Aftermarket mags are frequently crap.

                            2. Cleaning/Lubrication issues. Not just the common and easy to get to stuff, but the gas port and piston. make sure the trigger and hammer pivot points are lubed.

                            3. Springs. Original springs are quality items, but at this stage they are old and can be sacked out.

                            4. Bad parts. Extractor, ejector (more likely the spring, see above), op rod and worn pivot pins.

                            5. Did I mention magazines????

I'm wondering how many of you guys with cycling problems, have a piston nut tool, and use it when cleaning?
