Cut down barrel SKS....anyone here done this?

The Royal Tiger $199 SKS special has got me thinking about getting one to cut down to paratrooper size. I actually owned a Norinco paratrooper in the past, and foolishly traded it. Still regret it till this day. Looking at today's prices, para's seem to fetch mid $400's and up. Seems like this would be save me a little cash, no? Or is it more trouble than its worth? Anyone here on the boards ever done this? Pro's, con's?!?

Slight loss of MV but not enough to worry about. With new crown cut, accuracy could improve if you scope it. Unless you plan on doing the work yourself, the gunsmithing alone would cost you more than the $400 you'd pay to buy a paratrooper. Might want to just pay the extra $$$ and get what you want.

Then again, I like working on stuff, so do whatever makes you happy.

I actually cut the barrel on my Yugo SKS (it had the usual welded over grenade launcher, bayonet mount etc.) I ***think*** it's about 17 inches. I took well over a pound off the muzzle weight. That and a synthetic stock make it much handier.

I used a method I have used before: Cut the barrel with a dremel, squared it up with a machinist's square and files - then created a dished crown with a come shaped stone and finished it with a brass screw and valve grinding compound - both chucked in a drill.

I should mention that you are likely to have to open up the gas port to get it to cycle. This surprised me since before I cut the barrel back it would toss the empties 50-75 feet!
